Right calf significantly bigger than left one...worried
« on: January 15, 2013, 05:18:52 PM »
When I got home from work last night, I noticed that my right calf was signficantly bigger than my left one. Like my boyfriend noticed right away when I stood in front of him. It was a bit better this morning, but still bigger than the other one. It is not red or painful or anything else. I have also been noticing that when I zip up my boots, the right one is tighter. I don't know if this could be a blood clot, or something else (I always try to search through others' posts before posting my own, but this time I saw that apparently one side being bigger than the other could be a sign of muscle wasting on the other side and ALS, so now I'm paranoid about that). I injured my right foot/ankle last year and so I would expect that the right side will always be a bit more swollen after a long day of sitting, but I can't believe it would cause such a difference in size, especially since that was over a year ago and I haven't noticed this much difference until now.

Has anyone had this before? I'm trying to tell myself it might just be a case of my body not being symmetrical, but it is such a difference that I don't think it could be only because of that.

My right quad is almost two inches bigger than my left, has been forever.  Most likely nothing in the absence of any symptoms.

Yes!

This was seriously one of my biggest freak outs about 7 years ago.  I spent weeks obsessing over my varying calf sizes, staring at other people's calves, googling causes, doing little strength tests to myself all day long, etc...

Um.  It's 7 years later and my calves are still different sizes and I haven't thought about it in ages.  I'm sure you're fine.  They've probably been like that for a long time, you just never noticed until your anxiety level was high and something triggered you.

The right side of my body is pretty jacked up—it is always the side I feel pain on and am more prone to injure it. I think it stems from general asymmetry and the fact that I broke my right foot twice when I was younger. As such, my right foot/ankle will swell up more easily, I have pretty much chronic right hip pain, I have IT band problems in my right leg, etc etc etc. And these are all problems stemming from injuries that happened years ago. So, yeah it's still possible for you to be having lingering effects from a previous injury, FOR SURE.

In case anyone is still confused:  googling your symptoms will cause you to remain in a state of extreme anxiety. Stepping away from the internet is the first step toward lasting peace.
