Fear of the paranormal
« on: January 15, 2013, 03:43:11 PM »
I have always been terrified of the paranormal, but it seems to get worse as I get older. I cannot sleep without a night light and my bedroom door always has to be closed because I'm afraid a ghost or demon is going to come upstairs from the basement and come into my room. I leave the bathroom light on and close the door to prevent Bloody Mary from coming after me. I'm afraid that there is a lady demon that lives in my mirror in my bedroom and I am constantly checking behind me when laying in bed to make sure she isn't there. I cannot sleep with my closet doors open. I never let my feet dangle off of the bed. I have to have my bed pushed against a wall instead of the center of the bedroom because I feel safest when I can sleep against the wall (where nothing behind me will get me). I suffer from insomnia and so I wake up when it is still dark outside. As soon as I get up I turn on all of the lights in the house. I do not live alone...I suspect if I did live alone then I would never turn off the lights. I'm afraid if I don't turn on the TV, that the TV will turn on by itself and something will come out of it. The list goes on and on...

Anyone else afraid of ghosts and demons?

I have a paranormal website. Let me assure you there is nothing to be worried about. Bloody Mary is just urban ledgend. Not real. We have a few similar urban ledgends here in Ireland too. Certain building, if you walk around it 3 times something is meant to happen. Not that it ever has. The paranormal is all about belief. Just a religion is all about belief. But if your fear is that than most experts on the paranormal would tell you to put your faith in God. Hang a cross in your room. Say a few prayers. Because it can get to the point were if your mind believes in something so much you might begin to hear noises. In the exact same way that if a person expects an anxiety attack they will get an anxiety attack. The mind is great at playing on tricks on us. I assure you that you have nothing to fear at all. What you fear is all urban ledgends and myths.

I guess I am so afraid of the paranormal because I believe in it. I am less afraid of a serial killer breaking into my house than of some evil entity coming into my bedroom. Any time I hear a strange noise at night while laying in bed, my heart pounds in my throat and I freeze up in fear. I have been deeply influenced by all of the ghost stories I've heard and watched on TV, and all of the scary movies I've seen. I can't watch scary movies anymore because it affects me too much. I try to tell myself these things aren't real and try to not think about it at night, but my fear is strong. I was terrified of ghosts and monsters as a kid, but unlike most people I never grew out of it. I feel like I need to grow up.

Why not have your house blessed? Won't do you any harm at all. Might help with your fear. There is also various cleansing rituals you can do yourself. I am sure a few Native American Indian sites might have a few on them. There is one you do with sage. You light the sage and walk around your house cleansing it with the smoke from the sage. Simple things like that. Put your mind at ease.

Ghostbusters is here.  :laugh3:

Do this once through out your home.

Note: When addressing the enemy, speak aloud. You don't need to do this in a loud voice, even a whisper is fine, but the enemy is not all knowing. Please pray these prayers in faith believing and not as a chant or as if reading a memorized shopping list.

Go through your house with any oil, it doesn't have to be anything special, olive oil, vegetable oil, baby oil are all great. Put a small dot of oil on top and the sides of every access way into your home, windows and doors and interior entryways into every room of your house, including basement and attic. (You only need to do this from the inside!) If you have a garage, do not forget to anoint this building as well. Pray this. "I pray for the protection of the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ over this room/window/entryway."

Go through your house, asking the Lord to show you any object or item that gives you pause, that makes you wonder if it is to be prayed over. Questionable statues, posters, books, movies, CDs, souvenirs brought back from vacation, knickknacks, jewelry, that sort of thing. Ask the Lord if you should anoint it, praying the prayer above over it, or just dump it out of your house. Don't spend hours wondering over objects, ask the Lord to speak to you clearly and quickly and trust Him that he will show you what if anything must be removed or anointed.

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I command a hedge of protection to be around my home and property today and I ask that warrior angels sent by the one true God would be placed to stand guard at any holes that might be in that hedge. *Holes in the hedge can be caused by yet to be dealt with sin, trauma or wounding in the lives of the people who dwell in the home.

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I command any free, unbound, or wandering spirits to get out beyond that hedge of protection now.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I ask that warrior angels be placed at the doorways and access points to my home and property today that would keep out any free, unbound or wandering spirits that would try to access my home and property today. Jesus, send warrior angels that would bind and separate from their functions any demons attached to any individuals entering my home and property today. * An access point could be cable TV, internet, telephone or other communication devices in the home, power hookup, water supply or heat source.

Father God, I ask for a spiritual umbrella of protection over me and a spiritual hedge of protection around me. I place the full armour of God on me, and I ask that the light of the Lord Jesus shine through me this day.

If you are plagued by nightmares, restless nights sleeping and a sense of uneasiness in your bedroom, pray this before going to bed each night.

Father God, I ask that you would send warrior angels at the bedposts of my bed. (Alternatively, the corners of your bed if you don't have a bedpost) and I declare that YOU are the Lord of my nights.

Wow! That might actually make me feel a lot better. I can go around and chant when my parents aren't home, and I can easily say a little prayer at night before going to bed. I will try this. Thanks!

I know what you mean! I have been terrified of the paranormal since I can remember! When people asked why I couldn't have doors open when I was sleeping I told them it was cause I was worried about serial killers because I was embarrassed about the truth. I always had to have my bed pushed against the wall with a line of pillows/folded blankets along the side of my bed that was exposed. My sheets always had to be tucked in and I could not look out the window incase a ghost or demon was there. I used to recite the same prayer every night and not move from a specific position incase it alerted something to my presence. The mind and how you can perceive things can be absolutely frightening and belief in things that other people simply don't believe in can make them really hard to talk about but you are not alone. Before you go to sleep, write down "nothing can hurt me, I can do this" 20 times and then slightly alter something about your night time rituals, for example, turn on a different light instead of the bathroom light or change the order of lights you turn off.
My mum forced me to face my fear and moved my bed into the middle of the room. I was mortified by the idea but I was also mortified by the idea of disappointing her. So I left it there. I piled my pillows and blankets all the way around my bed and slept in my the centre of my bed on my back so that nothing could sneak up on me. That was a year ago and I still sleep the same way. I have a pretty irritating routine when it comes to night time and my fears of the paranormal but I try to alter something slightly every month so that I can feel good about myself for achieving something.
Try to alter your routine, just slightly, and see how you go. Best of luck to you and best wishes!

I am SO glad I'm not alone in this! I realize that my fears might be irrational, but at the same time it is the "not knowing" for sure if ghosts or demons exist that terrifies me. I have some nights when I'm not as scared and I can sleep facing the wall, but I am still constantly checking behind me. I actually got a daybed because there is a bed underneath the one I sleep on, so it is not physically possible for something to hide under my bed. Anyway, I only have these fears at night or when I am home alone (I do not go down to the basement during day or night unless someone is already down there). When I was younger, I had even more bizarre rituals to make myself feel safe. One example is that I had a rule that if I didn't open and close my eyes more than three times then nothing could get me. I was also very afraid to tell anyone about my fear of the dark, only my mom and brother knew about it. But after a long time in therapy, I have finally been able to tell my therapist about it which encouraged me to tell less immediate family members and close friends about it. None of these people share my fears, but it does make me feel better to talk about it.

Thank you for your suggestions! I will try them. Also, my suggestion for you would be to try to talk about your fears with other people, especially if you have a therapist you trust, because it can be really helpful. :)

I know exactly how you feel! I'm the same way. I keep the lights on 24/7, I don't like looking in mirrors because I'm scared I'm going to see something standing behind me or something. I bring my cat or dog with me everywhere in the house with me because I've read they can sense spirits. I wont look out windows at night, and I have to keep my door closed because I think something is going to come in through it.

I really love reading about the paranormal though (even though it more than likely helps fuel my fears/imagination).  My family and boyfriend are used to my weird ways now (Im 18) so it's not really a problem at home, more so if Im staying at my boyfriends place. Glad to know that I'm not the only one with these fears. I hope we can all find something to help us get over them. :)

Yup, I also love to read about it. I also like to watch "Paranormal State" and "Children of the Paranormal." I am just as fascinated with it as I am afraid of it. I also love scary movies. However, I have been avoiding these TV shows and the scary movies for several months because my fears at night have become so much worse...and I know that watching these things just exacerbates my fears. I do hope to face my fears and start watching the shows and movies again, but for now I just need to avoid it.

I have this same fear and have as long as I can remember.  I grew up with a very religious family and went to a strict catholic school and I think that has something (a lot) to do with it.  I also can't watch things I'm interested in because of it.  Commercials give me nightmares.  Its horrible to live with because its something you have to deal with every single night of your life.  I am married and mine isn't as bad because my husband as with me.  He travels but the last year when he is out of town my son started sleeping with me (he's young) and I don't have it near as bad. When my son gets older and has to sleep in his own bed I'm thinking it will come back.  Things that have helped me are sleeping with the tv on (even though I hate any kind of light), reading if I'm worried, saying scriptures/prayers, etc.  At one point I was on anxiety meds and noticed it went away, however after having my daughter when I started the med up again I had a bad mental reaction and now I'm not on any meds. I totally understand how you feel.  I believe in the paranormal as well which makes it worse.  I try to tell myself no paranormal has ever been scientifically proven but that doesn't help.  Soooo I guess what I'm saying is you aren't alone.
