Hangover anxiety
« on: January 13, 2013, 10:07:32 AM »
I like to think I am currently in a very good place with my anxiety, it no longer bothers me on a daily basis it lingers in my life but its not as bad as it once was, but I find if I have been out drinking for a night out, my hangovers are much worse than before my anxiety plus my anxiety seems to kick up a notch. It goes away within a day or 2. Any body else experience this and anyway I can prevent it!? (Don't suggest I stop drinking, I'm 20 years old, I wasted too many of my teenage years on anxiety worrying and not out enjoying myself that I am making up for it now & enjoyin life)

hmmm don't suggest to stop drinking?  well being a nudge (and particularly if you are in the US) you are not drinking legally anyway and that can open up all sorts of other issues for you.

drinking is often an issue for those who have anxiety.  in other words it makes it worse long term and short term.

what have you done to reduce your anxiety disorder or are doing that indicates that your anxiety is not a big issue?  Anxiety does wax and wane but it doesn't really go away without taking appropriate steps to address the disorder.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.

Where I live the law allows me to drink from the age of 18 actually :)

How does it make my anxiety worse in the long term?

My anxiety seemed to go away through time, I'd spent months in therapy & a few weeks after I stopped therapy (couldn't afford it anymore) my anxiety slowly started to ease.

Hey friend! I have 'beaten' my anxiety pretty much as well and have this same problem when I drink too much. The best advice I have for you is to drink to a point where you aren't going to get a bad hangover. Drink one glass of water per one drink and eat a banana and then you won't get hungover. Cheers!

If I drink, I always drink a carton of coconut water before I go to bad to replinish my system. Haven't had a hangover since I started doing this.

When I was drinking (I'm currently pregnant, so obviously not at the moment), I would try to drink 2 glasses of water for every alcoholic drink. The only two times I ever got a hangover were when I did not do this.

It's a matter of feeling in control for me. Have a small glass of water with every drink. You'll pee more, but when I do that, it gives me a sense of maintaining health and balance. Also, it keeps me from getting so wasted I actually do get sick. Whoever suggested a big glass of coconut water had a good idea too. Any non alcoholic liquid will do.

Getting a buzz on is awesome. But I always go out of my way to avoid getting dehydrated while getting drunk. It makes it so I never have to worry I'm going to get sick and do that hard, drunk vomit.

I could have written the original post, Anxiousa!!!  You're not alone at all.  I got very buzzed Friday night and was very anxious all day yesterday.  I was a little light-headed off and on and had a sore muscle in my shoulder.  I was convinced I was either having a heart attack or had a brain tumor.  I have been off my anxiety meds for almost 2 months, so sometimes I struggle.  But I know when I can go from heart attack to brain tumor within a few hours, then I know I'm being ridiculous and have to remind myself of that!
