Ladies Only!!
« on: January 13, 2013, 08:41:13 AM »
For most of the month, I have "manageable depression", but right before my period is due to start my depression goes through the roof. I cry over nothing, feel hopeless, and am so low I just want to stay in the bed all day with the covers over my head. The feeling of hopelessness is the worst since it becomes almost impossible to see what the point of continuing on is. I do realize that this is obviously hormonal, but what can I do? I am on 10 mg of Prozac and will be increasing to 20 mg next week. Do you think this will help? Also, do you have any tips for dealing with "this time of the month"? Thanks in advance...

As a lady I know that hormones are awful and men don't understand. Some days I just want a hysterectomy. With Prozac I get really moody too. I would suggest talking to your doctor about switching to another antidepressant. Sometimes you have to try a couple different ones to find the right one for you. I think the one that made me feels like I was normal again was the Effexor... but everyone is different.

Hi stephconn,
right before my period I get really emotional at everything. Even something funny will make me cry and afterward its like great now people think I am just an overly emotional wreck. However, as soon as my period starts and when the first day of pain goes away, it is the only time in the month I feel happy. I am not sure about the medicines but I do know some birth control can help but you have to find the right one for you which like in my case took forever and I think I need to find a new one. It is true what behindblueyes238 says;
but everyone is different.
Hope this helps or at least gives you another idea to look into.

Ive heard of a depression that follows your menstral cycle.  Have you talked to your gyno?  One good thing is if you know its coming you can be ready for it & brace yourself instead of just a random surprise.  Best of luck!

Ok, well this was posted a while ago..but I have the same thing! I don't get it all the time, but sometimes for a few days before my period starts, I just feel miserable and nothing will cheer me up. And then once my period starts, I feel back to normal.

I don't know about the Prozac as I have never been on it, but I guess now that I think about it, I didn't get it as often when I was taking Lexapro. But talking to your gyno like Atlas suggested might be good. They have probably encountered this problem before and maybe understand why it happens.
