RESULTS ARE IN!! Thyroid Ultrasound
« on: January 12, 2013, 09:23:50 PM »
Right Lobe: Gland, 5.2x1.4x1.5 cm.
Two Nodules Found: Lower-pole nodule, 0.6x0.3x0.5 cm.
It is complex, well-defined margins, no microcalcifications, no vascularity.
A less well-defined nodule in lateral mid-pole, 1.1x1.6x1.0 cm.
It's hypoechoic, well-defined margins, has vascularity.

Left Lobe: Gland, 4.8x1.6x1.4 cm.
One Nodule Found: Lateral lower-pole, 0.5x0.4x0.5 cm.
Complex, well-defined margins, no microcalcifications, no vascularity.

The Isthmus is thin, homogeneous in echogenicity.

I'm 22. Nodules found at 16.
Some differences, i.e new nodule.
Larger nodule use to be over 2 cm.
No growth, besides the above.

Blood tests were normal, but waiting for new results.
Also, waiting result for thyroid antibodies.
My grandmother (passed via old age) had a benign groiter (sp?)

Should I get surgery... or, continue to wait and watch?

I don't think anyone here can advise you on that. What does you doctor recommend?

I see my Endo. on the 21st.
I have a little while to wait, so I was curious about advice...

Personal experience, maybe? Or, what would you do?

I've never had a thyroid ultrasound, but I've had a fuckton of ovarian ones for cysts, including one giant one that you could've played ball with.  Assuming they're similar in basic ways, I think no vascularity means it's almost 100% certainly benign because it has no blood supply.  DO NOT PANIC THAT ONE HAS VASCULARITY as it's still probably benign.  Most are.  It just gives you more freedom to forget about the other two.  Thin walls and homogenous in echogenicity (sp?) are also good signs.  Well-defined margins are a great sign, as cancerous things tend to be "blurry."

In your position I would request a biopsy on the second one, NOT BECAUSE IT'S LIKELY TO BE BAD (it is very very very very very likely to be just fine), but because I WOULD BE OBSESSING OVER IT OTHERWISE.  But I think your best course of action is to ask your doctor what he or she recommends.

Also, in the 1 in 25000 or whatever shot that it is thyroid cancer...thyroid cancer is barely cancer at all it's so curable.  One little surgery to take the gland out and you're done, very likely to never have problems again!

My mom's been through the thyroid nodule thing herself so I have a little insider info from our doc ;)

That's the problem with thyroid issues - there really is no hard and fast rule for anything.  Normal results mean nothing - there really is no NORMAL range.  It's how you body handles the way your thyroid is working or not and whether it behooves you to go on medication or have surgery.

You might want to seek a second opinion if you're thinking about surgery.
