food gets stuck in to my throat
« on: January 12, 2013, 10:55:13 AM »
What is this now?

Everything I eat, feels like it gets stuck. It feels more down in throat, and more other side. Just took a pill, and it got stuck there really bad. Now I`m having a panic attack about this! Cancer, right?

feels like throat is "numb" or something now! and have to swallow all the time. Oh my god, feels like throat is closing now! My wife looked there and it`s not red, swollen or anything.

Have had this on and off for couple of days. This time it just wont go away! I mean had the feeling of food getting stuck few times, but it goes away with water etc. Now I had a panic attack (still going on) and throat feels really weird.....to the point it`s hard to talk. It`s like super dry and "numb". I guess I have to stop eating now.

Ok. panic gone. but it REALLY is hard to swallow any food down. the sensation is on and off now, and only other side of back of the throat/front neck area. guess I`M finally dealing with a real serious problem here. all those years with acid reflux, too many beers, 24/7 Anxiety finally got me. C.

It`s really nice talking to myself

Ok now, will you take a moment to calm down and breathe? I've had reflux for over 12 years. I go through periods of time, sometimes weeks, where I have the problem of things getting "stuck" in my throat. I've also experienced the kind of numb sensation too. And believe me, when my anxiety is spiking those symptoms get a lot worse. The more you get yourself spun up and in panic mode, the worse your symptoms will be. You are in the midst of major anxiety, you aren't being completely rational and your symptoms are exploding. You aren't dying, you'll be there to care for your child and then some. Please be kind to yourself, slow down, breathe, think things through.

taken some reflux meds, no help. This is so scary! It must be some growth somewhere, caused by reflux or something. my throat feels "tight" all the time, hard to breath, and can`t get anything down, everything gets stuck.....I mean literally. This just too much  :( So much other stress too, just too much.

oh and talking makes it worse, and my voice is really nasal or something. and my neck and face muscles are also really tensed and tired.

I get this and have accepted the doctor's diagnosis of the fact that it is gobulous hysteria. It is an actual condition that is sometimes a result of acid reflux. I take a Zantac  when I feel it getting out of hand because sometimes it effects how I feel like sometimes I am nauseated.

Is it really just anxiety?  :( It`s so weird, sometimes it`s just my throat....annoying tight feeling there, kinda like simple sore throat. Then I swallow my reflux pill, and it feels like it gets stuck somewhere, more down I guess, and  then horrible pressure in chest, neck, throat. Then it`s panic time, and feels like can`t breath.

Ok, the whole family has had some stubborn flu 2 weeks. nothing major, just feeling tired, little sore throat etc. yesterday had a better day with swallowing (though I had some beer, maybe it helped), only sore throat and voice going off. aaah, what a relief I thought, it`s just a sore throat! But today  :traurig001:

god I`m hungry, but theres no way to eat, no way. unless I take some beer again.

For me it really was just anxiety. I lost a lot of weight and lived off of ensure for months. I was in bad shape and came close to beig in the hospital. I took Meds and therapy.

I have similar issues with my throat - tight all the time (over a month now), each swallow feels odd - like half a swallow, or numb at the top, or closed at the top, eating and drinking feels a little forced - although no choking or getting totally stuck - and then my voice feels affected too.  Often feel congested in the nose and top of throat - but no phlegm there - it is a horrid feeling and does not seem to go away.....and when I am busy doing something and not thinking about it, it causes a weird sensation and then reminds me about it.....grrrrr
Got an ENT appt coming up.  Hoping it is all anxiety, and will fade in time.......
Hope your does too

I have had many symptoms recently which make me think I have ALS, but they only started after my dad was diagnosed with it a few months ago....so although in theory that increased my risk, in reality it would be the worst, most evil coincidence in the world for us both to develop it within months of each other and I am sure I have the symptoms purely because I am thinking about them all the time....after all, the aches and twitches and weakness I had a couple of months ago have all faded now, now I have another part of the body to worry about!...that's what I am forcing myself to accept

Sorry, I should have added...my dad didn't start with bulbar, although it came soon after the limb onset, but for months it was his speech that deteriorated, to the point that he now can't speak.  Only recently did he develop the swallowing issues, and this is consistent with what I've read, that swallowing comes on after significant speech slurring (ie: people can't understand what you are saying without aid of an alphabet chart to point at).  That was his experience anyway.  Just thought I'd say this in case it reassures others (why won't it reassure me!!??)
Thanks

Nah, it`s not aLS

All I know for sure life is just god awful everyday. this never ends! And for some reason, this time, I KNOW this is a real deal. I can feel it. Maybe it`s not anything death serious, but something that definitely will need surgery etc. I seriously, sincerely hate life. 10 years of non-stop symptoms, I`M so depressed, I can`t find no words. nothing helps.

Twitching is not a first sign of ALS..it comes on after muscle weakness/spasticity has set in/you're falling over all the time or dropping everything - serious muscle weakness/falling/dropping.
I know what you mean about 'this time it's real' - I bet so many of us on here have the same thought processes - I did in the summer over a scare about something else, wrote goodbye letters to my kids too - but still here.
I am sure I am fine (in my heart of hearts, today at any rate) and I am sure you will be fine.  But anxiety creeps everywhere, all the time...
I hope you are fine, I am sure you will be...

Something similar (kind of) happened to me around 5 years ago. Except for having the "swollen throat" my tongue felt EXTREMELY swollen. I couldn't talk, eat .. anything. I SWORE i was having an allergic reaction. I rushed to the ER and looked in my throat .. everything was fine. They still gave me benadryl to make me feel better. In my worst anxiety moments, i still get the "swollen tongue" feeling. I chew a piece of gum, or get my mind off of it and BAM it's gone. Your mind can really play some nasty tricks on you. Get your mind off of it. Go chew some gum! Don't think about it. And DON'T call the ambulance. You're okay! =)

Im having this now myself, not choking on food but its a tightness in my throat and sometimes when I go to swallow it's like I have to force it. I'm not choking on food or anything but just a fullness feeling in my throat that comes and go's and sometimes it's feels like it's suffocating me when the fullness feeling comes and I'm so scared as well. I have wondered if it's the other onset ALS that starts with difficulty swallowing. I'm talking fine as well.

I've dealt with food getting caught in my throat/throat tightening, all due to my anxiety. I've found that when I feel as though my throat is closing, it helps to not swallow and focus on breathing instead for several seconds. When I can see that I can breathe it helps me realize it really is just anxiety.

This is really stubborn symptom now  >:( It comes and goes. In a morning and after nap it`s always gone. but then it comes again. So after I`ve slept it`s not there.

It feels more the other side of the back of the mouth/troath/neck/ear......hard to describe, kinda like fullness, pressure......almost cramp like sensation. awful scary feeling. Wondering if it`s muscle tension? My tension neck is really bad though.

it feels like my throat muscles are really tired. And my left hand is too and thumb twitching, tired, cramping, easily going numb.

This may reassure...

had my ENT appointment today.  Same symptoms as everyone else posting on this thread.  he had a really good look, with a camera up my nose and down throat, felt my swallows too, and said he could see nothing at all - it all looked clear.  I asked if there was a neurological problem, would he have seen something?  he said, 'absolutely, things would have been different down there, and the symptoms you describe aren't the way that would present'.  He said what I had was a very very common phenomenon called Globus Pharyngus (Globus hystericus I think) which really does produce actual symptoms of tightness, phlegm feeling, dryness, nose pressure, difficulty swallowing, and which can be exacerbated by stress, but which is totally harmless and will subside over time if the anxiety calms too....he recommended drinking lots of water, maybe trying a nasal wash, and trying to relax.  He was lovely and made complete sense.  Now, I need to keep that at the top of my mind and not let it wander into dark territory again...and got CBT session starting tomorrow too.  I am hoping that will be the real answer.
