Derm appt -- worried?
« on: January 12, 2013, 08:01:13 AM »
I've posted about the little mole in question.
I went through a bunch of old pix on my computer and I could not find any of my chest, duh, I dont take pics of my chest randomly. But every photo where I'm wearing a lowcut shirt doesn't really seem to show the mole. Not surprising, as it is sooo small and the camera might not pick up on it.

It's really small.
I think I got it in the past 6-12 months. I'm so worried it's melanoma!!!

Can melanoma present in something soooo tiny? 1 mm in diameter? I hear it can but I dunno!!

Well firstly let me say that you are not alone with the new-mole-freak-out-thing :-)  I am going through a very similar thing myself currently which prompted a minor-HA episode about other pre-existing moles which I've had for a long time (eg: Does this look different? How long have I had that? etc etc...).

Melanoma can start as a tiny dot, but it grows and progresses over time. After 6-12 months you would likely have seen a noticeable change I would say. My wife's grandmother had melanoma for many years before having it removed and it grew quite wide across the surface of the skin before she noticed it enough to get it checked out. In short, if it's still a tiny dot after 6-12 months I REALLY don't think there's any cause for alarm at all.

The fact that you have a specialist appt is great news. Nobody else can give you the peace of mind that an experienced Dermatologist can. They will probably look at it for 2 seconds and tell you what it is straight away, or do a biopsy if they're not sure. Either way, getting it checked by someone who knows what they're looking at is the only way to go.

I am convinced that it's nothing and you'll be totally fine. Pour a nice cup of tea and try not to worry! ;-)

Recently you have given people some very good advice.  I suggest you apply it to yourself as though you were a neutral observer.

Thank you lovely individuals very much. That is great of you to reassure me. I don't need reassurance, but i just wonder sometimes -- jeeze, could this really be melanoma?
It's kinda funny looking.

Please note. That in reality, it is 1 mm big.
That is a SUPER HIGH DEF image taken at a close distance.

It looks kinda weird but it's soooo darn small!

That IS a weird mole, but it doesn't look like any picture of melanoma that I've ever seen.  I have a mole on my leg that's a flesh colored nodule with a tiny brown patch on it, so I think sometimes moles are just unevenly colored.

It doesn't look like melanoma, no. Also I have heard smaller melanomas are much easily curable. Since most melanomas are over 6 mm and this is like 1 mm at most, it's really tiny. Super tiny.
