body noises
« on: January 10, 2013, 04:35:39 AM »
do they make you anxious?
and yeah im talking about your stomache growling, but just 5 minutes ago i heard something extremely weird,

it was like.. liquid leaking, lasted for 2 seconds, and happened again 5 seconds after. it freaked me out and instantly sent me into a mild panic. now my back feels tingly/burning but im pretty sure its unrelated.
after i heard it i started to go full hypo, analyzing my body, getting that strange vibration in my calf again,
AND IM WATCHING HOUSE, thats not helping.
and i swear if anyone says "consider changing the channel" i will not be pleased lol

No, they do not make me anxious because I know my body is an organic being that will make funny noises and sounds as it works to keep me alive. I also know it will sometimes do crazy stuff as it adjusts pressure, digests, thwarts off fear, and helps keep itself alive. It's all normal. We are just people.
Hell, even machines make funny noises!  :P

My body makes digestive noises and has various aches and pains. That is all part of
being human.

Mmm, well maybe the back tingling is a stress reaction to freaking out about the stomach noise. Freaking out over digestive noises is a new one for me—I haven't heard anyone complain about that before.

Listen, this is how stress works. You are irregularly prone to hearing "body noise" or sensations. They happen (stomach gurgle, gas pain, extra beat of the heart) and because of our ramped up stress response, we WAY overreact and immediately interpret what we just felt/heard as something ominous or potentially life-threatening. Because of the overreaction, our stress hormones spike, which in turn creates more symptoms (in this case, back tingling) and then we get MORE worried because all of these other "scary" things keep happening. All the while, we barely realize that it's our reaction to the initial noise that is causing the rest of our "symptoms."

The key then is not to interpret our bodies' noise as "scary" or "dangerous." If you can manage to feel an extra heart beat or hear a weird stomach gurgle and not go into a tailspin, that's half the battle right there.

In case anyone is still confused:  googling your symptoms will cause you to remain in a state of extreme anxiety. Stepping away from the internet is the first step toward lasting peace.
