Upper GI/ Endoscope and Cyst on Ovary
« on: January 09, 2013, 12:32:49 PM »
I'm really trying to face the medical things that have been hanging over my head for quite some time.

Last Tursday I finally got the nerve to go for the pelvic ultrasound my doctor ordered in November due to pain at ovulation time.  The ultrasound revealed a 4cmm simple cyst on my right ovary.  I'm scheduled for a follow up in 8 weeks.  I'm relatively calm (thanks for newly started therapy sessions, I'm sure!) but slightly worried it will still be there in 8 weeks and I'll have to keep watching and waiting and it will never go away and hang over my head forever.

Today I finally saw a GI for years of GERD (I've been before but that doctor didn't order a scope) and he's sending me for a scope next Thursday.  I'm actually a little excited to get it over with since It's been hanging over my head for years...but of course a little anxious about what he'll find after many years of GERD.  I have taken medicine for it, it's never been untreated.  And I'm only 33...both GIs that I've seen have said my age is definitely in my favor.  But still.  The doctor I saw this morning gave me the Barrett's Esophagus, Esophogeal cancer is on the rise talk...and really,  I didn't need to hear that!  I've googled enough to know this and that's why it took me years to schedule a darn scope.

So, even though I'm not freaking out yet (believe me, I've been much worse!) I'd really love some been there, done that stories.  I was really hoping they could schedule the scope sooner and I could get it over with.  They said they'd call if anyone cancels but I'm not holding my breath!

Been there done that! I had a cyst when I was around 12 it sucks but they usually just go away on their own! I think they're pretty common too.
An upper gi isn't as bad as you would think! I freaked completely before mine but its over before you know it! I never even had a sore throat or anything after.
Everything is going to go great just relax!

Thank you.  I had a cyst once before.  It was 2cm, also on the right ovary.  We monitored it for a year and a half and it never changed.  Then, I guess because my HA wasn't as bad back then, I just forgot about it and never followed up.  That was 5 years ago and I'm still here...

I worried that this is the same cyst, just grown.  My doctor said that's highly unlikely and even if it is she isn't concerned because it's still a simple, fluid filled cyst and relatively small.

The GI said the scope is a "quick 3 minute test, out like a light, I won't remember a thing".  I'm sure he's right, I just hope he doesn't find anything scary in there.  Odds are he won't, I just have to remember that!

Yes, been there-done that. I've had GERD for literally years. At one point or another I have been told that I have a simple cyst on my left ovary, my right kidney, my liver, and most recently, my pancreas. I have had at least 4 endoscopes to boot. The cysts, so far, have all resolved on their own. I go in this spring to have the once a year check on the pancreatic cyst. (that one freaked me out the most-still does, honestly) The endoscope is really no big deal. I've had one show nothing going on, two showing inflammation just outside the stomach in the esophagus, and one showing mild inflammation in the esophagus. In each instance, they did a biopsy to check for barrett's, and there was nothing. It's always going to be a bit scary-you wouldn't be quite human if you didn't have a little fear beforehand. I hope you do well.

Thank you.  I just wish I could go NOW and get it over with.  I hate having to wait a week!

And the cyst.  Ugh!  I don't check on that again until Feb 28.  I just want it gone so I can keep making progress in therapy.  These little set backs are not fun!

My 14 yo daughter had chronic reoccurring ovarian cysts starting at the age of 12. Her pedi put her on birth control and she has not had one since. You are only 33, so as long as you don't smoke or have untreated high BP, you could go on the pill to prevent them. And it can be low dose, becuase I know the controversy with estrogen.

And both my daughters had endoscopies. Yes, you have your age working for you. I am sure it will be fine, it is simple procedure, and you can put your mind at reast. Barretts usually does not show up until after age 50. And that is usually with untreated GERD. For many years.

My doctor didn't offer the pill to get rid of the current cyst, only said I could take it to prevent more cysts if I keep developing them.  I really hope this one is gone when I have my next ultrasound!

And just 4 more days until the scope.  I really want to get it over with so I can stop worrying!  I feel like I've been scared of this one test for years.

Can anyone else tell me a positive scope story?

I was doing so well yesterday but I woke up this morning with a knot in my stomach.  I hate anxiety.  Just 3 more days until the scope.  I'm really nervous but looking forward to getting it over with so I can stop worrying about the results.

I'm really resisting the urge to doctor hop and go get another ultrasound to check the ovary cyst too.  I promised my therapist I would stick with one doctor...but that one doctor doesn't want to do another ultrasound until the end of February.
