Anxiety causing sleep loss
« on: January 09, 2013, 10:11:29 AM »
My anxiety is causing sleep loss and its getting worse. I am getting 3-4 hours of sleep a night. Not sleeping makes my anxiety worse, its like an endless cycle. What can I do to get some sleep.

I am scared of Xanax because of becoming dependent.

I understand. I usually let myself take only .25mg once a day for a month or so until my anxiety goes away and my body is in the rhythm of sleeping through the night again.

I'm sure you could google natural sleep remedies. Hope you find something that works. Not sleeping seriously sucks. I feel for ya.

I can relate. I'm going through one of my sleepless cycles now.I fall asleep at 11PM and wake up at 4AM. I try to go back to sleep for a couple of hours but just toss and turn. I find that 1/2 Benadryl about 1 hour before bed does the trick if I'm in high anxiety mode. Benadryl can also have the opposite effect on some people though. I know people that it makes them very edgy and anxious.

Hi,
Well I can vouch for anxiety causing sleep loss. It's 330 am where I'm at and no sign of anxiety letting up. I feel like I can't breathe and my arms feel very heavy :( and this is all after 30mg of zispin. I've actually been debating whether to give sleeping one more go or just get up. When i was coming off effexor a few weeks back, I didn't sleep for about 2 weeks. maybe an hour a night but no more than that. Anyone have any suggestions? I need to stop getting to sleep when it's bright out  :(

As scary as being dependent on anxiety meds are, they saved me in my opinion.. I didn't sleep for weeks and if so it was maybe a couple hours. You could maybe try the least addicting one like valium.
Not sleeping is pretty damn scary..  Ive almost weaned myself off of them and am sleeping my regular 7+ hours again.

I gotta be honest. Sleeping problems associated with Anxiety are the worst for me. Not being able to sleep with the associated mind-racing, rumination etc... is enough in it's self to send me over the edge. It's sheer terror and makes everything much worse. I don't see a pattern or rhyme or reason why sometimes I have severe problems with sleep and Anxiety.

But one conclusion I've come to in the last 10- plus years of suffering is that. There are two intertwined yet separate issues at work here. 1. Is the PHYSIOLOGICAL- bad brain chemistry etc..  2. How MY mind deals with the interpretation of the  physiological symptoms.  Sometimes in moments of clarity, I can plainly see the I allow myself to buy into the crap that's happening in my mind. Other times I don't see the distinction and go right along with the snowballing insanity. Everybody's personal situation is different. And mine is certainly unique in it's self.

Hope this provides a little insight into our shared challenges.
