throat issues
« on: January 07, 2013, 07:39:09 AM »
i all my name is Vicki I'm new to this site but not new to anxiety all for the last year or so it has not troubled me up until about a month ago when I had the feeling of a hair at the back of my throat ever since then I'm struggling to eat thinking I'm going to choke on everything. I'm fearing meals times. I'm drinking alot to try and chill myself out so it's easier to eat but I have acid reflux so this is doing me no favours it's taking over my life. I see there are others with similar issues on here so thought I could get some advice. Thanks for taking the time to read my post

I think you'll find that swallowing issues are pretty common around here!  I've never had the exact sensation you've described...but I've had similar issues with swallowing in the past.  I know this: the more you think about it...the worse it will get.  Swallowing is an automatic function.  We don't normally think about it...we just do it.  If you think about the process of swallowing you'll notice it...and it will drive you insane.  I don't know how to get past it...in the past I've just moved onto something else to worry about!  I guess you just need to confront it.  You can either get yourself checked out or maybe just really be mindful.  If the fear of swallowing pops into your head...confront it.  Tell yourself, "yeah, I'm afraid to swallow" and then make yourself ask yourself (in your head) why you're afraid...get specific...and then answer each question.  For example, "why am I afraid to swallow?"  "Because of the weird feeling in the back of my throat."
