Scared of Night sweats
« on: January 06, 2013, 11:14:32 PM »
I've had night sweats most nights now for the last few months. My doctor took it seriously and ran blood tests, checked my lymph nodes and gave me an abdo and chest CT scan the CT scan found a lump on my liver that an further ultrasound said was most likely a hemangioma. Both my doctor and an oncologist decided that my night sweats were probably hormonal even though my hormone blood tests came back normal as I'm 48 and they could find no other cause.

However the night sweats continue every night and wake me up every night. I am unconvinced that it's just hormonal as my hormone blood tests were normal and I don't get any hot flashes during the day (night sweats are meant to be nocturnal versions of hot flashes during menopause) also my periods are still normal and regular.
I'm also concerned that my abdo ultrasound came back with the lump was 'most likely' a hemangioma and not a definitive diagnosis as I'm not worried it could be liver cancer and that's what is causing the sweats.

Has anyone else here had night sweats during pre menopause as their only symptom? I'm really worried my doctors have missed something.

You do not have cancer.
This is gonna sound dumb but have you tried to turn the heat down? When I fall asleep in a warm room I will wake up in my REM cycle after sleeping for a bit, DRENCHED IN SWEAT, just utterly uncomfortable, ready to kill whoever turned the heat up -- and I'm a healthy 20 yr old female!!

Try sleeping in a chillier environment.

I have no heating on in my room, though it's summer here now and I have the aircon on. It's not hot in my room at all, my husband is fine and doesn't feel hot. It's definitely not the room temperature that's causing it. I've never had any trouble sweating at night before it's just been the last few months.

I have sweating a night. I am nt sure they are true night sweats as I am not drenched. However, I do have sweat running off my legs, chest, and now my lower back. I am pregnant, but even before that I had sweating mainly from my chest.

I am scared to death if these stupid sweats. I hate going to sleep. I have had them off and on for a year now. They have increased recently, and I am hoping it is from the pregnancy. They scare me to no end. We keep our home very cool so I do not think mine are environmental.

I fear lymphoma, but I don't seem to have any other symtoms.

I've read that they can occur during pregnancy so that is probably why you are getting yours Sighnomore.

I guess mine aren't exactly what you would call drenching, my sheets get damp but not soaked through. I mainly get it on my chest back and legs which are slick with sweat but not dripping. It's enough to wake me from my sleep though and occurs several times each night.

Had several again last night, they're really worrying me. My doctor has just about written me off because of my HA now so I can't really go to him unless I get new symptoms as he'll just ignore it. I don't sleep in a hot room, I'm really worried as to what is causing these.

I think that now, more than anything, they are probably happening because you're anxious about them. These thoughts don't stop rolling around the ol HA mind once you fall asleep.

While I'd like to believe that I don't think it's because I'm anxious about them. I stopped worrying for a while and still got them it's only the last week or so when they have become worse that I've started worrying again.

Also I find it very hard to believe doctors when they tell me that everything is OK as I've had some bad experiences in the past of misdiagnoses of both myself and family. My son nearly died at 12 weeks as a result and my dad did die as a result so when a doctor tells you that he doesn't know what is causing the night sweats but it's probably hormones it's difficult to be reassured.

i get paranoid about my sweating as well,
sometimes i'll even start thinking im drenched in it, though i wont be sweating at all, although it sounds yours is very real, haha.
plus lately im notorious for having my mind play nasty tricks on me.
i get that feeling that im about to break into a bout of hyperhidrosis when really its just normal sweat from being next to my heating vents.

all i know is that you shouldnt worry too much about it, does it just happen when you sleep?
remember that your subconsious is where the anxiety stems from, and sleep is when the subconsious mind is most active, as far as i know.
as we all have proved here,
you dont necessarily have to be consiously anxious to have symptoms.

yes it just happens when I sleep. That's what worries me because sweating at night when asleep can be a sign of several types of cancer one of which is liver and I had a lump found in my liver that was classified as 'most likely' a hemangioma (which is benign)

well consider seeing another doctor if you're able, but i do know that i constantly wake up sweaty, i am naturally a heavy sleep though, so it never really jolts me up, but night sweats are DEFINITELY asymptomatic of anxiety. if you are worried about it before you sleep and when you wake up, chances are, its going to happen, as far as anxiety symptoms go.,

I'm menopausal - I have the night sweats .......

On the other hand, if it were me and they found something on my liver, I'd get a second opinion.

How are you doing, sass? I totally dread going to sleep out of fear of night sweats. Again, not drenching, but still very wet nonetheless. I have not sweated the past two nights, just woken up warm so that has been a HUGE relief! Just praying that the sweats stop for both of us.

Are you on any SSRI's? They caused me to have night sweats.

Hey SighNoMore, I'm still sweating the same every night :( had two sweats last night, I'm the same as you I dread going to sleep now.

Winky, yes I'm on SSRIs but I've been on them a year and a half and the sweats only started a few months ago.

Sass and Sigh - are you guys still sweating? I had quite a few days where it stopped recently, but then literally, the day before yesterday, as soon as I realized it hadn't happened, boom! They started again, that. iChat and last night. Possibly a little more than before? Like you guys, not super wet, but noticeable on my chest.

Why????!!!

Colls, did the same. Stopped for a few days (which is unheard of!) and BAM started again. I don't know if it was because I was cognizant of the fact that I wasn't sweating and thought about it that started it again or what :( Just hate them!

My chest is the usual spot as well, along with my legs now.

Well, I guess we can take comfort in the fact that we seem to have the same thing going on, along with some other people. So, either we're all done for, or, we're all fine :)

Yeah I try and remember that when I start panicking...that I am not alone! It just freaks me out, and then my brain says oh I must be sweating more than the others, etc etc. It is maddening!

I just can't get it into my head that it's benign. There must be something causing these sweats and just because the doctors haven't found it yet doesn't mean that there isn't cancer there somewhere. I'm terrified it's fatal, the sweats are so obvious it's not drenching but it's not just a little either, I'm slick with sweat down my front and down my legs every night even when the room is cold. I just want it to stop.

Same here, Sass! That describes me too. The house is cold yet I sweat! Do you wake you cold with chills or hot?

I agree it's driving me crazy. I just want to know what is causing them it's frustrating when the doctors don't know what's causing it as my imagination goes into overdrive.
