How much is nutrition playing a part?
« on: January 06, 2013, 05:54:42 PM »
Hippocrates - "father of western medicine" said "let food be your medicine"
the book im reading now "Healing Without Freud or Prozac" has a chapter all about the Omega-3-fatty acid.
Apperntly low in consumption in the western world and high in Asia, China, Japan, etc..
Im quoting the book here:

"when taken out (Omega 3) of the diet of lab rats, thier behavior changed completly in a matter of weeks:
they became anxious, cant learn new tasks, and go into panic when subjected to stress (when introduced to a
pool of water). the rats present boredom that can only be solved with high doses of morphine"

as the book states these fatty acids play a role with the buliding and functioning of neurons in the brain.
needless to say, im adding omega 3 rich food to my diet. for me itll be walnuts daily. im hoping itll do something for me.

The refined western diet is definitely too high in omega-6 fatty acids and deficient in omega-3s. However, the incidence of mental illness is at least as high in Japan as it is in North America and Europe.

Omega-3s/fish oil has been shown to ease mild to moderate anxiety and depression. However, you'd probably need to take more than just a handful of walnuts to see any benefit. About 4-6 x 1,000mg capsules/day would be better. To avoid producing diarrhea it is best to start on one capsule/day and increase by one every 4-5 days until you reach your desired dose.

NOTE: I'm not a doctor, and particularly not yours, so there may be factors I'm unaware of. Therefore all advice is of a general nature and you should consult your doctor before following any of it, especially before changing med doses.
