Hypochondria in teens...help!
« on: January 04, 2013, 07:29:32 PM »
Hi everyone! I have had anxiety/panic attacks for almost two years (I'm almost 18). I have always had health anxiety but it had recently become uncontrollable. I had what I think was a small kidney stone about a month ago (I had a major one--severe pain, vomiting, etc that sent me into Urgent Care about a year ago) but the X-ray and ultrasound came back inconclusive. That is what triggered what I'm going through now...I think. I began having pain behind my knee that comes and goes, but I immediately became horribly scared of having a blood clot. I know I'm low risk--the only risk factor I have is being on the pill and I'm pretty active, not overweight, and I eat very healthy. No matter what I tell myself, and not just in this case but before also, I have an entirely overwhelming fear of something serious. I know two girls my age that have had lymphoma, one passed away this past summer, and I can't help but think that something is seriously wrong with me too- a heart condition, colon cancer, dvt...what helps? I'm driving myself crazy and it's making my anxiety worse!

Have you spoken with your parents about this?

there are things you can do to get better.  As a parent to 6 kids, my first suggestion is to talk with your parents.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.

I feel ya... I'm 16 and have health anxiety and generalized anxiety disorder, im not exactly managing it right now but i'm starting therapy soon, usually i just talk to my mom about it, but my mom and i are really close so depends on the relationship you have with your parents! this website has helped a lot though. What really helped me is that literally every body pain you feel is a symptom of anxiety disorder, as long as you still don't have it when not feeling anxiety! hope all is well soon :)

I feel your agony sis! I'm 18 too! I started suffering Health Anxiety (Hypochondria) since August 2012 when my left knee became swollen, painful and i was convinced it could be a bone cancer!! :traurig001: So i convinced my mom to get me checked and the ortho told us it was only a Meniscus Tear. (maybe this cause my sudden exercise without the help of a professional coach cause i was pushing myself so hard.) Well mommy know's best she even told me it was nothing! And now i fear many illnesses like Lymphoma, Brain tumor, Leukemia!  B-;
Well anxiety can create physical symptoms like Chest pain, Shakiness, Tension headaches, body aches, muscle tensions etc.

You are not alone and we are too young for this! :sick0002:

I hope you'll feel better soon!!  :action-smiley-065:
