Worry vs Trust
Worry Is Condition When We Fail To Trust !
Worry causes the sympathetic nervous system to activate the Fight-or-Flight stress system. Chronic activation of the FF system causes sensitized nerves.
Current research has shown that Allostatic Load disorders are caused by chronic hyperaroused, sensitized central nervous system. These disorders include:
Anxiety - Panic - Phobias - Irritable Bowel - Fibromyalgia - Pelvic Floor Muscle Dysfunction - TMJ - Chemical Sensitivity and Dermatology Conditions.
We also know that a chronically activated nervous system is probably causal or etiologically significant for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - Depression and exacerbates other psychiatric and medical conditions. The American Medical Association has stated: "85% or more of all initial primary care patient visits are due to nervous system (stress) over arousal."
Most core trust issues are formed in childhood. Neurophysiologists have shown that adults who grow up with adverse experiences, are over protected or do not have their basic developmental stages met have nervous systems that do not self-calm properly. We become hard wired to be alert and aware - a lack of trust in our care givers, the environment or ourselves.
Each time we are hurt, disappointed or unfairly treated our trust issues are damaged. Each time we fail to act from our highest wisdom we suffer more personal mistrust.
Most of the stress, worry and lack of trust is internal and below our awareness- a festering process that goes unnoticed until a major trust issue emerges. When we are challenged to believe and trust when there is no concrete evidence of a positive outcome it can become an overwhelming challenge to those with broken trust issues. Depending on how often your trust has been violated, the severity of the occurrences and the age you were when it happened it can take relatively small triggers to put us into a tail spin of worry - fear and illness.
For someone who has lived with dominant predictable and positive occurrences they have learned to trust that even major life catastrophes will work out - for people with broken trust issues, a morning discovery of a new pimple can signal a cancer fear - or a child out of place means a pending catastrophe.
Trust is the foundation of human mental health - the more predictable things are and the more we see positive resolution to problems the more relaxed we can live our lives. This starts with the family! If your parents were able to create predominantly good feelings for you - able to protect and nurture you and take care of challenges with a positive outcome, if prase and punishment were predictable and they modeled healthy mental and physical attributes you learned to trust.
When we learn to trust as children we learn to trust the universe as a benevolent home. We do not feel alone in our challenges and we feel like everything will be OK no matter what.
If your family did not create this trust many people felt they had to rely totally on themselves or superficial things outside of themselves to survive. This lack of trust and obsession with making sure they are prepared for unseen threats sets the nervous system into chronic arousal. The Hebbian Theory shows, that done often enough the nervous system looses the ability to calm and return to normal- it lock into high gear and burns us up......this is the beginning of the Allostatic Load conditions stated above.
When children grow up with a broken trust system or as adults we experience a major trauma we can develop behaviors that further erode the trust system. Anytime we chose a behavior that is not in our best interest, have unfulfilling relationships, fail to live an honorable and harmonious life , settle for things we don't want in our hearts or do not express our core truths we chip away at the remnants of trust we have.
Once we have reached a point that we can no longer trust ourselves or the weight of externals we cannot trust grows the stage is set for emotional suffering and chronic illness.
A comprehensive look at what we trust in our lives should start with us, our behaviors and our thoughts (negative thoughts are a broken trust issue). Then we move outward to look at everything in our lives that does not provide security and trust. The more we are surrounded by people and environments that are not worthy of our trust, do not engender positive emotions or take more than they give the more we perpetuate the broken trust system.
Once we have done a scrupulous inventory we must act. Small steps to move into personal integrity and surrounding ourselves with a predictable, supportive environment will start to rebuild trust -be aware this is a slow process as the damage often runs very deep.
Unfortunately most people with broken trust issues seek out dysfunctional ways to cope. Bad behavior, addictions, poor relationships, being used, denial...the list is long. They often seek solace outside themselves by using medical models of drugs and holisitc treatments - what is required is personal introspection and engagement.
THERE ARE NO DRUGS THAT TREAT CORE ISSUES - IN MOST CASES THEY PREVENT AWARENESS AND HEALING
This living from the Outside-In perpetuates these conditions. We must learn to live Inside-out. We each have an internal voice of absolute wisdom, a voice of our souls connected to the great mystery ( God - Higher Power etc.) we can call on.
Most people do not know this exists so they go outside for support and information. When we are separated from our core spirit and have broken trust issues it is almost assured that dysfunctions and illness will occur. No one but us and our soul has the road map of our wellness. No One!!!
When we have not listened to this "Still Small Voice" it will grow silent until we invite it back into our lives. We do this by sitting in meditation and silence, removing the psychological blocks and denials we have built to protect ourselves and eliminate everything in our lives that is not in harmony with our True Self.
The same spirit that animates us and holds our unique personal wisdom is the same energy that animates nature and the universe. Everything in nature and the universe is predictable (this is the basis of all science) - the sun rises every morning - birds fly south at the appointed time and flowers never become trees.
As we reconnect with our internal voice and spirit we are in touch with the same predictable energy that orchestrates the universe - it warrants absolute trust and shows us that we can have access to wisdom to build our trust and sense of security - calm the nervous system - be at peace and in health!!
This is the Peace of living Inside-Out!!
