Strange feeling under right ribs! Help :(
« on: January 04, 2013, 04:42:05 AM »
Hello everyone, I was just wondering if anybody here has or had this?

It's basically a weird "numbing" feeling on my lower right rib. It's not something I would consider pain, but a strange sensation. It's like that area is becoming numb or slightly getting tighter.

The strange thing is it only happens whenever I am in particular positions. One is that when I lay in bed on my right side and the other one is when I bend over for more than 10 seconds. The sensation almost immediately disappears when I sit in other positions other than the mentioned ones.

Another thing is: I had definitely had this in 2011. It lasted for about 2-3 months. I fought it hard by just ignoring it and it went away for quite some time. It was only until 3 days ago that I discovered that it has returned.

I don't know if it's muscular or something to do with my eating habits/indigestion? I mean when I first had this in 2011 I was recovering from indigestion. It has been 2 weeks as well since I returned to my poor eating habits (eating late and only twice a day) because I came home for Christmas.

I'm anxious that it could be about my liver! And I'm scared that it could be some tumor or gallbladder issues. My friend said that gallbladder issues aren't like this since he said they you are supposed to have "attacks" which are really painful. I don't have that fortunately.

Anyone had this? :(

Most things that go away when you change positions can be attributed to a muscular or skeletal issue. It very much seems muscular. Remember, there are hundreds of very important muscles in your abdomen! Any one of them can screw up, it's just a part of being human!

Thank you betty.

What is making me cling on to my sanity is that I had this before and it just went away. But now the HA is back in full vengeance, I can't shake it off :(

Anxiety causes muscle tension, especially in your abdomen and your back. Even if you don't notice it! It does. I have very tight back muscles and often find my jaw is about to snap, and I don't even remember clenching it!

If you had a liver problem, chances are your skin would be turning yellow and you would have bad stomach issues and digestive problems.

Thanks, Betty. I don't have any other alarming symptoms that may pertain to liver concerns but I am just scared of it. :( I hope I am not going thru this alone :(

Ugh weird tickling-tight sensation is still here. I usually feel it after a loaded meal. :( I'm thinking that my muscles and fat are getting squished but I'm thinking something worse!

It immediately goes away when I sit up. :(

burgundy, do a search on here about right-side pain. It is EXTREMELY common amongst anxiety sufferers, typically without any found cause.

It's muscles, it's tension, it's the effect of being chronically stressed for so long.

In case anyone is still confused:  googling your symptoms will cause you to remain in a state of extreme anxiety. Stepping away from the internet is the first step toward lasting peace.

I've had something like this myself on and off since October. It basically came for a month, went away for a month, and now it's been back for a month again. I worry about mine constantly as well (especially since I have fatty liver and I worry about my liver becoming enlarged or scarred) but if it's just a sensation and not actually pain, I think that's a hopeful sign. My stitch is constant no matter what position I'm in (thought it seems to go away when I'm exercising) but this is such a vague pain that it's impossible to guess the root...the fact that shifting to various positions can ease it for you doesn't preclude it being anxiety. When I had an ultrasound in November at the height of my liver/pancreas fears and got a better diagnosis, my pain went away the very next day. A preoccupation with a certain area of your body can create this kind of thing, I think, even though it's hard for me to believe my own ideas sometimes now that my own liver fears are back. Peace and good health to you.

THank you vardnas. I hope it is just muscle tension. Now I am having this sort of this weird very mild pain at the right side of my back! :(

a14, I am scared of having fatty liver. I am only 22 years old and I feel like I have it already. I cannot get it out of my head. :( I am trying my best to exercise daily to at least lose some extra pounds. I hope this doesn't involve any internal organs. :(

If it makes you feel better, I just had another consultation with my doctor about mine today and was told that it is 100% reversible with diet and exercise. I dug a hole for myself by leading a sedentary, high-carb, high-sugar diet for years even though I'm predisposed to diabetes and that's why it happened to me at the age of 24. I simply have to lose 10% of my body weight, keep at that weight, and I should be fine for the rest of my life. I've been terrified about it since I learned about the different stages but all of the medical sources I've spoken with say that it's entirely within my power to fix! Even if you did have fatty liver (which you only have a 20% chance of having and less if you're in shape and/or don't have metabolic issues), try to keep this in mind!

My stitch is still here but I was palpated today and the doctor couldn't feel any enlargement. I'm going to chalk it up to something psychological or muscular in nature and try to put it out of mind. In the absence of other symptoms, I think that's the healthiest course of action for me. Take care!

a14, thank you again. I am about to lose my mind. :(

You say that your sensation is more of a pain rather than just a weird feeling? And how often do you feel it? Does it really not go away with shifting positions or anything? :(

Read some of my recent posts on rib pain/numbness, sensations.  While this is a common anxiety problem, it is often either dismissed or blown out of proportion by doctors, because major organs are located on the right side of the upper right quadrant of the body.  A couple of posts back I try to explain what the emotional effects cause to the anatomical body parts to people who are prone to this type of stress.  Just as some people get migraines, some get rib and upper back pain.  Try, try, try to accept the dx of anxiety -- if you have had anything pathological or structural ruled out, because the muscles and nerves effected by this are very sensitive and can cause a chain reaction of muscles and nerves that will, literally, twist your torso into a pretzel, causing you pain you cannot even imagine and which no pain pill will touch.  Your torso, unlike maybe a knee or even a leg, cannot rest, so if you do not accept the anxiety dx you will ramp up your fear an emotion to such a state that it will take a long, long time to unwind. I'm not trying to scare you; I am only trying to make you accept what so many of us early on do  not-- that emotions alone-- anger, fear, etc.-- can cause physical symptoms, and that yours (lucky you) manifest in the URQ.  Just don't Google this.  You will find thousands of posts on every type of forum -- and I have read them all-- and, as the previous poster mentioned, most undergo test after test with no conclusive results.  The only ones who rid themselves of this are the very few on those forums who understand that it is anxiety.

Look at my past posts.  I believe you can do this by clicking on my name, or just search right-sided or rib pain.

Believe me when I tell you it is anxiety.  Please.

Quite the opposite, it's normally just a sensation rather than actual pain. Mine is constant, and really the only times when it's aggravated are either when I'm in an uncomfortable position or when I'm especially anxious. That gives me hope that it's muscular, but considering that my HA centers around my stomach/liver/pancreas...you can imagine where my mind goes.

oh my I had something similar recently but I felt pressure under my right rib when sitting up.  I told my doctor and it all had to do with anxiety.  I thought my stomache had moved or something.  I stopped thinking about it and it went away.  Now I worry about other things!  I hate health anxiety.  :traurig001:

Thank you NeverAgain, a14, and Puggy.

Okay, now I am starting to realize that the weird sensation is actually coming from my flab (baby fats) when I bend over. It feels more exterior. It's like my flab is getting squished from the inside. I don't know how to perfectly describe it but this is the best way to explain it, I guess.  :fragend005:

You know, my rib sensation never feels like it's coming from deep inside either, but then I think about referred pain and things like that and get nervous again. But if you think you've found a harmless reason for your pain, just stick with that.

Funny thing is that my sensations have advanced to mild pain in the past couple of days, but I've also been more anxious...no idea which is causing the other.
