Oily stool
« on: January 03, 2013, 10:05:33 AM »
I had worried in the past about my floating stool, which seems to happen every time. I read about malabsorption issues and pancreatic cancer and all the things that could cause it. But wasn't too worried because the color and everything was normal. Well, two months ago I drastically changed my diet to lower my cholesterol and I now notice my stool is oily, as in, leaves an oily residue on the toilet water. I do eat a tablespoon of olive oil a day and also a serving of nuts. I read that olive oil coats your stool, but I am still worried. I have a regular follow up with my gastro doctor today so will talk to her but I am so scared this is the beginning of pancreatic cancer.

Beth, eating lots of nuts can also cause oily stools. You are fine! There are variations to stool patterns, and once you stop focusing on this and the joint issues you will see that you are fine. You are worried about leukemia and this. Highly doubtful you have either!

I lost my father to pancreatic cancer 4 years ago. He from what I remember was having some bad pain in abdomen which is what made him finally go to the doctor. My father was a quiet person and didn't go running to the doctor, so I don't remember him sharing much about what he was feeling, but I do remember the pain from what my mom said. His bloodwork evidently was off as well as his white blood cell count was really high. PC is from what I have read really rare in people under 60. My father was in his 60s when diagnosed.

So my gastro doc recommended I give up the oil and nuts for 2 weeks then see how things are. It has been 3 days and I had my second bm and there is still oil. I don't know how long it takes for things like this to clear your system, if that is what it is, but I am worried.

I know when trying to remove gluten, etc from your system it can take up to two weeks. Perhaps it is the same with this. It may take some time to get your gut and digestive system totally clear.

So, I am on day 6 and still having oily stools. My husband has been following my diet with the nuts and oil and thinks he has been having oily stools too. I am nervous though since I am still having it.
