Math people needed
« on: January 01, 2013, 10:56:14 PM »
So I'm trying to figure out something. It isn't really important, but I suck at math pretty badly and figured somebody here may be a bit better. I'm trying to turn the probability of something listed as 1 in 270 and 1 in 5000 into percents. I figured that 1 in 5000 is equal to .02 percent by doing 1 divided by 5000 x 100 ( or moving the decimal places to twice to the right ). I tried to do the same with 1 in 270 but got a weird number ( 0.0037037037037037 ).

that number is right.  Multiply it by 100 and you get .37037% repeating.  That is the official way to write it.  For your purposes ( reassuring yourself ) you can round that to 0.37%.  You can wait all day for that disease, and It will probably never, ever come.

Yeah it was listed as 0.4% on the site I looked at so I'm guessing that number is right, and they just rounded up to th .4, it just looked weird when I calculated it. Thanks for the reply.

It's a little too much to list it as 0.373737.... just like 0.666666666666 is sometimes listed as 0.67

Rounding, especially since the rounding up is so statistically insignificant, looks neater.

I will endure any pain, as long as it has meaning.
