Smoking Habit
« on: November 30, 2007, 06:47:33 PM »
hi all

i am just wondering if there are any of you who are stuck in the same awful habit i am in and so afraid of it at the same time.

i have been smoking on and off for about oh 5 years and cannot seem to kick the habit.  but at the same time i am so damn scared everytime i have a cigarette that i am going to die of lung cancer someday. it is so bad and i cannot seem to quit.

i want to know if any of you are going through the same thing, or if any of you have quit and if so, how did you do it???  im so anxious sometimes that having a cigarette is the only thing that helps right now and what the hell do i do without em? :sprachlos020:

any response would be greatly appreciated.  (and i know how awful smoking is....that is why i want to quit.)
thanks

Hey,im in exactly the same situation as you.Been smoking for three years and really want to quit but feel as though my anxiety wont let me.

Over the summer i gave up for three months(LOTS of water and plenty of yoga) but since i got back to college im back to 20 a day :(

On the bright side though, they say every smoker tries to quit 8 times before they finally kick the habit so hang in there!

ugh, smoking. I`ve been smoking for 10 years now  About 20/day.

"but at the same time i am so damn scared everytime i have a cigarette that i am going to die of lung cancer someday"

you know what, I think this fear is allright. It will keep you to not smoke too much. I have a "smokers cough", and lately I`ve become worried about it. It`s weird because I`ve had all these fears of every fucking disease in a world, but I`ve ignored the fact I`m a smoker, and someday I have to pay for that(obviously I`m in a trouble allready). I`ve seen a doctors for a million different things, they`ve always said you`re fine....just quit smoking and there`s nothing to worry about. Smoking helps, sometimes it feels like only relief for anxiety...

I was once without a cigarette for a 100 days! I wanted to celebrate it.....I decided to have a smoke. lol, what an idiot!

My wife and I quit when we found out we were going to have our first child.  It was really hard, but if you get through the first couple weeks, you are over the hump.  The urges will still be there, but the physical withdrawl will be gone.  I quit cold turkey and I think that is the way to do it.  I think you have to feel how painful it is to quit to keep you from smoking again.  Now, when I do some drinking I always have the urge to smoke and sometimes give into that urge.  On that note, I have also had to decrease my alcohol consumption considerably so that I won't smoke as much.

Take care,

I've done it!

I smoked for three years then all of a sudden my HA came on, and I convinced myself I was going to get lung cancer.

I finished the packet, but everytime I had one, I would have the worst chest pains (bought on by my anxiety).  I finished that packet over a year ago now - I went completely cold turkey after that - no nicorette or anthing.  I have had 3 since then, at social functions, and the chest pains start up again.

Honestly, just quit.  Cold turkey.  Or, replace it with something else - lollies?  Gum?  You'll find that somking is about routine, and if you just break that routine, after a while you won't think about it any more.  For me this took about 3 weeks.  Now, smoking doesn't even factor into my life.

Good luck!
