Sweating at night can't shake the fear
« on: December 23, 2012, 02:55:10 PM »
I am still sweating at night. Mostly my chest and legs. It is happening frequently. I have been doing this for almost a year now. It seems to have increased now that I am pregnant. I am not drenching, but definitely dripping with sweat.

Surely if this was something horrid I would have other symptoms right?

It seems pretty unlikely that any serious disease would not have declared itself after a year, and equally unlikely that this would be the only symptom of a serious disease.  I assume you have asked your doctor and been told it isn't anything to worry about.

I mentioned in the past...I try and not visit the doctor frequently, and they basically blew it off. It as hard to gauge if I should be concerned or not. I had a nurse at a derm's office flip out about it, but the derm seemed fine with it.

Again they are not drenching and I have no other symptoms. I do have itchy skin, but I think that is due to allergies and dry skin. It also isn't a deep itch.

Hi Sighnomore

I've suffered the same sweating at night on and off throughout my anxiety, when my anxiousness is high. Like you, it's normally just chest area.

I am also pregnant, 26 weeks. From the beginning right up until say 22/23 weeks I had nightly sweating at night, accompanied by odd, upsetting dreams. Chest and legs area.

I spoke to the midwife who said its completely normal and to do with the hormones and increased blood.

Also a couple f years ago I spoke to my doctor about the sweats and she told me that night sweats to be of any concern are the ones that drench you an the bedding. Where it's like you have been in for a shower. An even then not always something to worry about.

For us women and particularly in pregnancy hormones are to blame and in particular with anxiety sufferes, anxiety!

I'm not on here often any more as it fuels my ha. But feel free to pm me any time.

Good luck with the rest of your preg x

First off I'm a guy, just to clear that up. I have had night sweats with my anxiety where my pillow felt pretty soaked. I think it was a mix of wearing warm clothes, being under a warm blanket, and being next to my wife (body heat) causing me to get too hot. I do notice, and it was like that a couple years back when I was having anxiety problems then, that I feel like I start sweating easier. I sweat when I eat, and when I'm walking around walmart or something.

Thank you for chiming in everyone. I am just trying to tell myself this is a mix of anxiety and pregnancy. I just hate that I have done it for so long. Ready to move past this. It freaks me out to no end.

Still sweating, and still panicking. Just praying it is a mix of anxiety and pregnancy. I seem to mainly sweat on my chest where there is skin on skin contact. I just hate this....

I think that everyone gets night sweats from time to time. I know that I have in the past, and certainly now with my lymphoma fear they seem to be happening more often. Hopefully just a cruel coincidence or manifestation if anxiety.

I also really only get them on the chest, and just very light. Like another poster commented, when my doctor asked me about it, he really seemed to be interested in the drenching night sweats.

I hope it is just a mix of anxiety and hormones. Given that I have had them for a year now I just get worried, but I also think if it was something horrid surely I would have had other symptoms by now.

I am just so scared! They seem to definitely be more heavy than in the past. Just freaking out...

I am to the point that I don't want to sleep. I dread the sweating so, so much. I truly am trying to combat this negative thought, but when everything screams night sweats are bad it freaks me out!

I don't want to be presumptuous or anything, but I'd imagine that your worry about your night sweats are possibly making them worse.

I know for me, hormones can play a big part in night sweats, and as a pregnant lady, I'm sure your hormones are all over the place right now.

Are you doing anything now to treat your anxiety? Are you staying away from Google and looking up symptoms? Especially all of these places that are telling you night sweats are bad?

In case anyone is still confused:  googling your symptoms will cause you to remain in a state of extreme anxiety. Stepping away from the internet is the first step toward lasting peace.

You are not being presumptuous because I think you are spot on! As the day wears on I begin to dwell on them and am I going to sweat game begins a fierce battle in my head. I am going to counseling, and I have done very, very well about not Googling...until today. Sigh. I got so obsessed I began to Google again. Of course that helped nothing! Nothing!!

I am angry at myself for resorting to Google because I know that it brings about more harm than good. I am just trying to focus on the fact that I have anxiety, I am pregnant, but that ultimately I am mostly like ok. Trying to remember the words of my counselor as well.

I know how you feel. I have had night sweats for the last few months. I too get them mainly on my chest and legs, the sheets can become damp but not soaked through. I know hormones can cause them and I've read pregnancy can too so I'm sure in your case it's your pregnancy so hopefully they'll go in a few months once your baby is born.

I had several tests for mine and the doctor basically said he had no idea what was causing them and put it down to hormones even though my hormone tests were normal. Anyway I'm sure it's your pregnancy in your case but I know what you mean about worrying about going to sleep, I'm getting like that as it's also uncomfortable waking up sweating as well as worrying.

I'm menopausal and have night sweats - purely hormonal for me.  I will say that when I was pregnant (both times) back in the day, I had severe sweating issues on my chest - so bad it causes rashes.  Again - hormonal.

Thank you sass and Linda. I am hoping it is just hormonal. However, I had the sweating even before pregnancy, but I hope that is just due to anxiety. They started shortly after a doctor freaked me out and started throwing out the cancer word as a possible option of what was causing blood in my urine. Turned out I had several kidney stones.

I have been sweating for year now. I hate it! Instead of sleep being restful, it is stressful. I fear lymphoma something horrible and now discovering I have a rash has me running scared.

Man do I know how you feel re the being afraid to go to sleep. This has become a thing with me too, over the last several days. What were at first hot flashes during the day when my lymphoma fears began a little while ago have now subsided (knock on wood), but have been replaced by, you guessed it, night sweats. Just a little on my chest, but almost every night for the past few days.

It always seems to go like this for me, I'll be keeping myself JUST on the edge of sanity by saying "we'll, at least I don't have X symptom", and then what do you know, I get it! Hopefully this is just the HA mind.

Here's a question though, these little night sweats I get, I only seem to get them in the night during sleep. That is to say, when I'm back to sleep in the morning, or any other sleep during the day, I don't get them. If the distinguishing thing about them is that they happen during sleep, why wouldn't they happen during non night sleep? Is this too my mind playing tricks on me?

colls, I have the same issue. If I stay up late, etc nothing, but go to sleep and bam! here come the sweats! I have not had the sweating for the past two nights which has been wonderful! I am still dreading sleep though. I am also having an episode of rashes and itchy skin so I am even more afraid. I am just freaking out.

I even debate going to an oncologist, but my primary doc and my OB have said my blood work is fine, my nodes are swollen so I am ok. I just fear internal nodes are and they are being missed. I also fear that because I am sweating and rashy it is just a matter of time before I get lymph node swelling. I am at my wits end.

I have the exact same fear, of the internal lymph nodes being the ones that are swollen. I had an abdominal ultrasound today that will hopefully pick up any internal swollen nodes...hopefully. I know there's much controversy over exactly what test can see the enlarged nodes. Anyway, here's hoping.

The reason I first got on the internal nodes band wagon was due to some back pain (and much research), and now the back pain seems to have really gone down (knock on wood). But, I still hold the swollen nodes fear. Truthfully, I probably will for as long as I get night sweats, which sucks because I have a strange feeling that as long as I keep worrying about them, they'll keep happening.

I hate being scared to go to sleep!

Ps I had a minor freak out at the end of my ultrasound today when the technician said the results would be in today or tomorrow because someone had written "STAT" on the sheet. I immediately thought that what must have happened was that my doctors office got my bloodwork results, they were bad, and thus they called to rush the ultrasound results. Well, on very panicked phone called with my doctors office later, I find out my bloodwork came back, it was fine, and they have no idea why STAT was written on the form. Man!
