music that helps you deal with anxiety/depression?
« on: December 14, 2012, 06:33:32 AM »
i think we all probably have some albums that we listen to that help us deal with an episode, so what are the artists and albums (if any) you throw on during those times?

for me, "digital ash in a digital urn" by bright eyes seems to help me out a lot. that whole album seems to deal with anxiety, depression, etc. the lyrics are brilliant (conor oberst is one of my favorite lyricists) and it really seems to hit the nail on the head with whatever i might be going through at the time. give a listen to the song "hit the switch" and you'll see what i mean.

Although country music does not have a very big following - I love it and when I'm feeling extremely anxious or depression I listen to a lot of "beach" themed music. It helps me a lot to close my eyes and imagine being on a beautiful, warm tropical beach.

My staples are:
Knee Deep - Zac Brown Band
Toes - Zac Brown Band
Some Beach - Blake Shelton
Margaritaville - Jimmy Buffet
Seashores of Old Mexico - George Strait/Merle Haggard

Yeah I love music and have tonnes of variety on my ipod. I could go from classicl music, so I love listening to piano and violin songs from Beethoven, Bach and Mozart. There's also more modern music that helps with my mood such as bands like M83, Hammock, and Sigur Ros which helps me relax and take a deep breath and feel like the world isn't so bad. Then on other times I will listen to certain songs from artists that should get me motivated and inspired to keep going and not give up on myself.  For example I love 8 mile from Eminem, Rastaman Chant from Bob Marley and the Blueprint from Jay-Z.

This one from Brian Eno helps me slow down a bit when I am dealing with anxiety and has nice chords which are very serene.

The album "Somewhere Down The Road" by Amy Grant.  Her voice always calms me and the songs aren't bubble gum, but instead about life and inspiration during hard times.

There's so many artists and songs that inspire me, and give me hope to help me through this very difficult disorder.
You know, sometimes its so nice to hear some encouraging words being sung into my ear, when I feel like no one else in my life cares or understands, its music that gives me back the hope I lost.
Some artists that I have discovered, and love include:

-Amy Winehouse
-Pink
-Mandisa ( a great artist who sings  religious, pop music)
-Leona Lewis
I also love lots of soul/jazz music, and also 80's hiphop, funk.

I recently bought the soundtrack to The Austrlian film 'The Sapphires' which is based on a true story.
It's got great songs on it like " Sugar Pie hunny bunch & whos loving you' which are old, but feel good songs! :))

Though I am not usually a fan of country music, "Safe and Sound" by Taylor Swift is breathtaking and comforting to me. If you want a link to the song, I just made a lyrics video today (not spamming, just trying to share a link in case it was easier on anyone, you are not obligated to use it, if it shows up even, I don't know)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GVH4twhcRU

If you don't like Taylor Swift or her version of this song by her, look up a cover by Christina Grimmie, she is a very powerful singer as well. I hope this song can be enjoyed by others as well as me  :action-smiley-065: .

One new song I recently found, "Coffin" by Black Veil Brides, uplifts my mood when I enter an attack.
Here are the parts that really help me get out of a panic attack:

...Won't let you suffocate me
You find your hell is home.

I don't owe you anything
You'll only die a dream forgotten.
I've got my pride so hear me sing
I'll never let you steal my coffin.

Words as weapons
Pierce into you
So self-righteous, have it your way
I'm alive and now I'm burning
Say a prayer to end today

MUSIC IS HUGE!  I turn to music everyday for inspiration and comfort.  I listen to my iPod Nano when I go for a run.  I have a little radio at work that will play my iPhone music, and I always have CDs in the car.  Music to me helps me to process my thoughts and  relax.  It is sort of like that white noise in the background that will make you feel better about being in an empty house or room.  I also play guitar and work on guitars as a hobby.  This is helpful too.  It gives my wringing hands something to do, and my mind to be occupied with something other than anxiety.  Love this topic here...very powerful stuff.

My favorites are RUSH, Van Halen, Mastodon, Tool, The Sword, Yes, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Porcupine Tree, The Who, King's X, oh and oh so so many more...

I love to hear the different renditions of recent or older songs performed in the show "Glee." I have a lot of those songs on my iPod and listen to them constantly.

I love almost all music though...except country music, which gives me a headache (don't know why).

I love operas and musicals. Recently I have been listening to "Memory" from the broadway show Cats, over and over again.

I go for happy music that makes me dance!
Mainly soundtracks from children's shows. :3 I'm A Believer is a favourite, along with Under the Sea (Little Mermaid), and Kingdom Dance, I Have a Dream, and many more from Tangled.
I don't need anything that's inspirational, and anything that describes how I feel will only make me worse. I want something which changes how I feel, ones that I can't help but get up and dance to.

Defiantly Radiohead. Planet Telex, off The Bends, perfectly describes how I feel dealing with OCD, and depression. Separator is right now my favorite song by them, I find the lyrics to be really uplifting. And I think every socially awkward teenager can relate to Creep.

I listen to a lot of Radiohead. Daniel Johnston gives me the feels too. His music is so genuine and I feel like I can relate to him because he's struggled with mental health issues his entire life (though mine are nowhere near as debilitating).

I also like a lot of ambient music. Lately I've been enjoying Celer. It's so moody and magical. It was originally a husband and wife duo but the wife passed away unfortunately. Knowing that only makes the music feel more lonely.
