Fear of Showering
« on: December 11, 2012, 08:39:33 PM »
Just recently I had a anxiety attack while taking a shower.  I have NO clue why this would happen or what triggered it.  Now, its all I can do to make myself take a shower.  I am scared that I will pass out while talking a shower.  This is the most ridiculous thing that I have ever been anxious about.  Anyone out there have this happen to them? >:(

I've had anxiety attacks in the shower. So you are not alone. Strange thing is I LOVE water, and I love to feel clean but I do get weird about being in the shower at times. What I find helps for my daily shower is wait until I feel calm, and while I shower think about pleasant things. Sorry if it's not very helpful. But I wanted you to know you are not alone at all.

Hi Kari,
 Yes yes yes!! Ugh!!
I started having anxiety and all the body symptoms so as you may know the dizziness that comes with this makes us feel unsteady and scared..so it becomes a cycle so when I shower I freak out also because I am so scared of falling or something happening and someone finding me in there naked and fat...true lol.
What I do now is have my radio on in the bathroom and sing along and I also make sure all my stuff is laid out that I am going to need..I am ocd also which means I do over analyze everything.
I know for me it does help to get in there and have my music and my things I need and I do ok but that woozy head still gets me and yes anxiety but it has to be done!! I even put a shower chair in there in case I need to set down..works wonders!!
Facing it is the only way to beat it but it sure is hard at times..
Good Luck you will soon be better and it will ease up!!

Thanks for all of your encouraging words!  I have been thinking about a shower chair and how that might help.  Cause it is a feeling of being afraid of passing out, my legs giving out.  I just think to myself, what the hell are you thinking and so scared about, ugh!  So frustrating!!!

Hi, I believe I had an anxiety attack in the shower 3 years ago, though I am not sure. I was just putting in some shampoo, which I had to bend down for, and when I came back up I put in and I guess I pressed on my eyes too hard getting shampoo out or something, but I was losing my vision quickly. (It might have to do with me staying up playing a game for two days straight..... which I don't do anymore and do not recommend.) So, I hopped out of the shower, grabbed my towel, ran to my bedroom and changed into some night clothes before laying down on the bed. I couldn't see for at least a full half hour. My sisters were nice though and brought me some water. Now though, whenever I close my eyes in the shower I see visions. Usually they are pretty gruesome: Family members getting hurt or myself, just not things you want to see when you close your eyes. During the day or at night it is usually fine, just in the shower. I have no actual fear of showering really, except for my usual anxiety's taking place at the same time, just sometimes that I am being watched by someone or something.... I hope we both can find a cure or some treatment one day and everyone else on the forum.

ive had anxiety in the shower too. all of a sudden i feel lightheaded and shaky and like im going to pass out. after i had that the next shower i had i was anxious before i even got in thinking, omg im going to have one in there again.... id say being stark naked it a pretty vulnerable state also, that sometimes runs though my head that what if i pass out and ppl find me naked?!? but it hasnt happened yet. if you start to feel shaky or lightheaded, you can always just sit in the shower and let it pass a bit. :)
