I am sorry to hear that you have an addiction.  Perhaps in time you will be able to wean off of them?

The best way to wean yourself off a benzo like Ativan is to get on a longer duration benzo like Klonopin, but even better would be Valium.  This way you can decrease your doseage in very small amounts.  Discuss this with your doctor and slowly lower your dose a little every two to three weeks until you are down to nothing.  This may take awhile if you want to minimize the withdrawl effects.

Just make sure you aren't taking them outside of your doctors prescription.  If you are then you should find an inpatient setting to stop using the medication.  These medications are very powerful and can work very well if taken properly, however dependency is the risk you take.  I know that I am probably dependant on Xanax, but I never need to take more than prescribed, I am much better on it than off it, and I know what to do when and if I decided to ever stop taking them.

I hope this helps,
OE
