trying to quit the cigarettes
« on: November 30, 2012, 02:10:23 PM »
So today is the first day that I have not bought a pack of cigarettes since I've started smoking 15 yrs ago. I've smoked only 3 today. I can tell this is going to be a hard task. Does anyone have any words of encouragement or helpful ideas to kick the Habit.

Hi,
Just wanted to wish you luck on quitting! Something I need to do myself.....honestly I am scared to! I will mention though, if you have an android, or iPhone there are some great apps for quitting. You basically cut down gradually, might be easier and less of a shock to the system. I tried the app, and per usual didn't follow through with it........anyway keep us updated on your progress, and best of luck to you!!!!

I managed to quit smoking (Was harder then quitting meth) and the best way is to not fight the cravings directly or you will lose. You have to subtly nudge yourself away from it mentally. Simple deciding you've had enough and think about all those moments when you can tell a family or friend hey guess what I manage to quit! think how proud youll be of that moment that you defeated one of the most addictive drugs we have. Don't fight it directly or think you are better then it or you will lose.

Good luck my friend!  :action-smiley-065:

Hi  :action-smiley-065:

I've been smoking for 8 years; I am somewhat of a heavy smoker. I have been wanting to quit for the past couple of years but I never seem to get very far...it's sooo hard! I can definitely relate.

I smoke to relieve my anxiety, but I think the nicotine makes me more anxious. It's a vicious cycle that I can't seem to conquer.

Have you had any success?

I used the website quitnet, their forums are invaluable. You can quit. If I could do it, you can too!

Oh. My. God.

I just quit smoking.  Last Wednesday marked my 2 month anniversary free from cigarettes!  However, I still think about it several times a day...especially when my anxiety or depression peaks.  I used the patch for a while.  Then the patch and gum together.  Now just the gum.  I did a lot of playing around decreasing and increasing my dosage of the patch.  It I felt that I needed more, I used more.  I chew a lot of the nicotine gum now.  My family doctor says to chew as long as I want.  The damage is nothing compared to the damage caused by smoking.

Quitting smoking was by far the hardest thing that I ever hope to have to go through.  There were days when I cried...a lot.  A few days ago, I had a panic attack and I just KNEW that a cigarette would make everything better.  I didn't break over though!

It's hard but so worth it.  Don't get discouraged if you slip up!  I did many times but I just kept trying and I can't believe where I am now!  So proud of your decision to quit smoking.  Stick with it.
