Afraid to take medicine?
« on: November 13, 2012, 09:24:37 AM »
I keep having random pains in my sides and a burning in my stomach, so I talked to my doctor and she thinks that I might have acid reflux, so she told me to take Prilosec OTC for 2 weeks and then come back. The thing is, I'm afraid to take the medicine. /: I'm so afraid that I'll have an adverse reaction to it...and it's this way with all medicine, even though I have no history of being allergic to anything. Should I make myself take the medicine anyway? I know that it's the only way to see if that's the problem, but I'm still just worried.

Yes, take the medicine. I am TERRIFED of meds but I take that and here is something to help you. I have an "unknown" allergy and get hives. The allergist gave me otc Prilosec OTC  and another prescription. The prilosec is also an antihistime! It blocks the histamine response in your stomach so has a VERY low reaction rate.

I have exact same fear you do. I refuse to take any medication! But, that is just going to minimize your acid in your stomach. There really isn't many side effects to it. I took it all through 3 pregnancies. You will do great with it and your symptoms may go away  :yes:that would be awesome

Try a teaspoon of baking soda in warm water, it may help, there are some natural remedies that work better than drugs.

I personally don't think anyone should be popping PPIs or super-duper strength antacids, but if taking it would help you get over a fear of medicine, then go ahead. Don't be surprised if it doesn't provide relief from your stomach problems, though.

In case anyone is still confused:  googling your symptoms will cause you to remain in a state of extreme anxiety. Stepping away from the internet is the first step toward lasting peace.

I have the same fear.  I keep benadryl in the house and just hope for the best.  So far it's never happened, and I have a lot of other allergies, so I think it's pretty unusual.   As people have said, Prilosec contains antihistamines (as an aside, benadryl is also helpful for an upset stomach if you don't have anything else in the house!), so it's REALLY unlikely that you'll be allergic to it.

You should take it! Lately I've been the same way with all medicines including my antibiotics for my ear infection and sinus infection. I had an allergic reaction to a steriod and now that's freaked me out I'm scared to take anything including advil! It's ridiculous and I wish ANXIETY would go kick rocks! LOL. When you take it try to keep yourself busy so you don't think of any reactions that's what I do and I find that it helps. Take a walk, turn the radio up really loud, read a book whatever works for you! :)
