Panic Music for inspiration?
« on: October 26, 2007, 06:29:43 AM »
About two years since I had an unplanned visit to ER, followed by a diagnosis of Anxiety Disorder, it seems like it's largely behind me - I guess it never completely goes away, but the freak-outs seem to be under control. The usual stuff - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, a little Ativan, great support from family and work (that I have to be most grateful for). Anyway. Something that helped me more than anything else was keeping it in perspective: today could be the 'new normal' - life *has* to go on.

To that end, (and in true Nick Hornby/High Fidelity style) I made a playlist of "Panic Music", partly to make fun of myself, but it turned out to be kind of inspirational. Maybe someone else here will find the idea interesting, inspirational or amusing. I'd love some extra ideas too - songs that seem to refer, directly or indirectly to the experience of anxiety attacks:

All Shook Up - Elvis Presley   "well bless my soul what's wrong with me..."
Under Pressure - Queen & David Bowie
Panic - The Smiths
The Gash - The Flaming Lips
Just - Radiohead
You Keep It All In - The Beautiful South
Out Of Control - The Chemical Brothers
Start The Panic - Luke Vibert & B.J. Cole

It's amazing how you can pull personal messages out of songs, but The Flaming Lips "The Gash" really kicked my 0104 and kept me going with tough love:

"Cause I feel like the real reason
That you’re quitting, that you’re admitting
That you’ve lost all the will to battle on
Will the fight for our sanity
Be the fight of our lives?"

Take care y'all and I hope you find the light at the end of your tunnel. It's there somewhere...

Hi and welcome  :action-smiley-065:

It's a good idea! In fact you're not the only one who does that, check out this

and this

A song which seemed to speak to me when I was in full-blown hypochondria was "Hands" by Jewel:
"If I could tell the world just one thing
It would be -
We're all OK.
And not to worry because worry is wasteful
And useless in times like these.
I won't be made useless
Won't be idle with despair
I'll gather myself around my faith
For light does the darkness most fear."
etc.

A sanderella is a mythical creature in Algerian folklore, similar to a mermaid. It is used as a cute nickname.

I like a lot of different music. This song seems to stick with me. Its by Tracy Lawrence, and its called As Easy As Our Blessings.

Lately I've been having more nights that I can't sleep
Storms of life keep blowing in
Aometimes it gets so heavy
It drives me to my knees
And it's coming down again
Then a voice inside reminds me of the roof over my head
And my wife and kids are tucked away warmly in their beds

{Chorus}
Up in heaven sometimes I wonder if God sits there and listens
To all his children thinking it'd be nice if we'd forget our troubles as easy as our blessings

Suddenly I don't feel like counting what I need
So I start counting what I have
When times are at their toughest
My wife still stands by me
And my children make me laugh
Then I crawl back in bed and start to think as I lay there
Could it be that he's already heard and answered all my prayers

{Chorus}

It'd be nice if we'd forget our troubles as easy as our blessings

As easy as our blessings

It's my life
And it's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
Its my life
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
'Cause it's my life

Here's a good one by Pink.

Doctor, doctor won't you please prescribe
somethin
A day in the life of someone else?
Cuz I'm a hazard to myself

Don't let me get me
I'm my own worst enemy
Its bad when you annoy yourself
So irritating
Don't wanna be my friend no more
I wanna be somebody else
