Trichtotillomania
« on: September 27, 2007, 04:26:43 AM »
I was wondering if anyone else here actually has this compulsive hair-pulling disorder.  I've had this since I was about 8 or 9 years old.  I used to place the hairs against the mirror as I plucked them out, never putting the hairs to my mouth or eating them.  I still place them on the wall or mirror sometimes.  Mostly I pluck my eyebrows and I've now had them tattooed on so I have SOME expression.  I also pluck my arm hair somewhat frequently and my eyelashes, primarily the top ones.  Basically, I suppose I have plucked everywhere there is to pluck and I also have a problem with leaving even the smallest of blemishes alone.  I've also got a few OCD symptoms like eating even numbers or chewing evenly, not liking to step on cracks, and other little odd habits...but that's beside the point, I suppose.  I have tried therapy and tried prescription medications...what's terrible is that the only medications that really seemed to work were ADD-related meds like Adderal , Effexor (depression) and Neurontin to even things out a bit...but then my clinical depression got out of hand or I felt jittery.

If anyone else has trichtotillomania and has had meds that have worked...let me know what they were so I can ask my doctor about them and whether she thinks they'd work better with my depression.

Hi

I suffer from depression, GAD, ADD. I also have trichtotillomania. I constantly keep pulling my hair. I am on prozac but it doesn't help. I think I need to talk straight to my psychaitrist amd tell her that I need a stimulant. Do you think that will help. My attention has improved little bit but not significantly. Do you think prozac will work anyway? My psych won't give me stmulant because I have mital vavle prolapse and I already take inderal to keep my heart rate down. I am 24.
