Doctors who contribute to Health Anxiety
« on: April 05, 2006, 03:53:57 PM »
Has anyone had this problem?

That doctors who are suppossed to reassure you contribute to your worry.

I have had significant health problems over the last few weeks and feel that the things doctors tell you make them worse.

Doctor A:  Went in with asthma problems-   Told me if I didnt go to a hospital I would die (freak me out why dont you)
Doctor B:  Was having a bad asthma attack and then proceeded to leave me in a room for 45 minutes while he wrote up papers to sent me to the hospital
Doctor C:  Ran numerous tests while I was hospitalized, never told me what they were for and what the results were.  Diagnosed a medical condition, gave me no information on it and then sent me home without treatment (which became worse)
Doctor B again:  On return visit said my heart rate was dangerously high, but again left me alone in a room for a good 30 minutes while I had a panic attack because he was filling out papers again
Doctor D:  Is convinced that the findings of the two other doctors about my condition may not be right (although he did not look through the charts, and didnt discuss what he thought was the problem).

I hate when doctors tell you what is wrong but then someone else tells you that it is not that.  What are you suppossed to think?

I've been there with my daughter...time to take control of your own health and tell them you are not leaving until they tell you whats wrong and how to fix it!!!
I had to do that before I finally got real help for her asthma.
good luck

What are your suggestions about that?

I am usually prepared.  I do the research, have questions ready, and know what I have to ask.  However, I come out more confused and with less clarity that I go in with.  I am sick of being stuck with a doctor group per my insurance  that cant work together (send each other labs, consult on diagnosis) and decide whats wrong.

I tend to have horrible problems with waiting for answers, whether it be waiting a few minutes for a doctor to come see me, a few hours for a test result, or a few days to get in to see a doctor.  The anxiety is nere wrecking.

My wife and her sisters have Asthma and I know it's hell. It's hard to deal with these doctors sometimes. They see so many people (especially in the ER) that they loose the empathy. Sometimes they seem to be more concerned with not getting sued than helping people out. I don't recommend this and only am giving out this story FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY (I don't want to get sued either).
I was in the hospital with my wife when she had her last attack. She couldn't breath and desperately needed a breathing treatment and medication. The doctor was an over officious type that wanted to make sure all of his paperwork was done before he attempted to treat her. Also wanted to talk to her doctor and get a second opinion before he started. I over heard a nurse tell him that my wife was in trouble and need treatment NOW. The doctor blew her off and told her he wasn't risking getting sued. He also told her that he was the doctor and he would make the decisions. Well, I knew I couldn't force him to treat her but I also found out what he was scared of. I picked up the phone, called my voicemail and started telling my "Lawyer" and told him what kind of treatment we were receiving. The nursing staff told the doctor that I was  calling a lawyer on my cellphone. The doctor came in hollering about how you were not allowed to use cellphones in the ER. I calmly acted like my lawyerwas asking his name and description. I gave it to my "lawyer" and hung up. Within five minutes she was on a breathing treatment and being given the proper medication. They checked her in within 15 minutes. As I left the hospital through the ER. every nurse was looking at me and whispered. I just held my head up and looked as serious as possible... remember THIS WAS FOR ENTERTAINMENT ONLY I'M NOT SUGGESTING ANYONE TRY THIS.....
