Fear water that can't be seen through.
« on: February 02, 2012, 03:25:07 PM »
The fear of deep water..or water that you can't see through.. is probably my biggest phobia. It will put me in such a panick that I'm not sure if I'd either sink because I'd fail to swim.. or if I'd go thrashing about trying to get out of the water. I get panicky just watching the movie Titanic!
My family doesn't know about my fear,my husband knows of it but he forgets. So I will go into the water... but the whole time I am silently screaming!
When I get out of the water I am so tired from the stress of my phobia.
I feel so silly about it.. but get me near deep, dark water...and there is NO ONE that can convince me that there isn't somethign in the water that's not going to eat me!!

Congratulations for having what it takes to get into the water even though you feel that way!  That's awesome that you can do that!!!!  Maybe the more you get in the water and realize you are alright, it may get easier?  Be proud of yourself....you are continuing to get in the water and you deserve a pat on the back!!

It is great that you get in the water, good for you!
I forgot about deep dark water, and it spooks me too.
Just the thought of what of what may be lurking down there gives me the willies.
Sorry. It's awesome you go in the water with a fear of it.

What's wrong with letting people know about your fear of the water?  It's a pretty common fear actually.

I've always been afraid of water - clear or dark.  I almost drowned when I was younger - it was during swimming lessons and the dumb teacher didn't even see what was happening.  Ever since then I have a mental block and I can't tread water.  That's when the fear of water started.  What to do?  Well, heck.  We have a boat and everybody in my family loves the water, so I put on a life jacket and jump in.  When we went snorkeling, I wore a wetsuit.

The dark water business - I can relate.  When I was in high school, I went to Shasta Lake with my best friend.  Fluke weather and it snowed the first night we were there, so we went to see a movie.  JAWS.  The next day we went water skiing.  The whole time, all I could think about was this shark coming up and eating my legs. LOL  Oh my gosh.  That fear is still there, even though it's ridiculous.  I mean, we're talking fresh water here.  Ugh!  There was one time I water skiied on the ocean.  Now that was scary, but what an accomplishment. It was kind of like "saturating" myself with the fear of dark water and sharks. It helped me to be able to go in the water with my life vest.

I've got the same fear! I can't swim around in a lake or ocean because it scares me too much. I'm also not a very good swimmer.
