Should I take Wellbutrin along with my Lexapro?

Hey all =) I've been on Lexapro 10mg now 2 wks for anxiety and deprssion. I notice a significant improvement already in my anxiety symptoms from the Lexapro. I told my psych I still felt depressed, so he wanted me to start Wellbutrin 75mg. I here it helps with the depression, and can actually help with side effects from the Lexapro such as delayed orgasm. However, I feel maybe it's too soon to see if I even need the Wellbutrin b/c I haven't even been on the Lexapro 4-6wks, which is the typical time to see the full benefits. But, both my psych & therapist think it's a good idea to add it. What do you think. Is it too soon? I don't want to be on more meds than I have to be. Or do you think it will be more beneficial to add it?

Hi Ashley,

It is not recommended that you take two different antidepressant medications simultaneously. Both Wellbutrin and Lexapro are antidepressants which, if combined, could have adverse side effects. Your doctor may advise against it as you will need to wean off the Lexapro before you can commence Wellbutrin.

The traditional weaning off period requires at least two weeks to ensure that your body is not dependent on the medication and allows you to start another medication. I feel that you should question what your psychologist/therapist has advised you because it doesn't seem wise to be joining two antidepressant medications.

Some of the other users should be able to give you some insight on this too.

I've actually heard good things about adding Wellbutrin to antidepressants, and am a fan of mixing antidepressants with a psychiatrist who knows what s/he's doing, which I'm sure yours does if s/he has your therapist's well-wishes.  It's a common practice, and it was the only thing that got my mother out of her postpartum.

If you feel uncomfortable with adding another one so soon, tell your psychiatrist and therapist that you'd rather wait a few weeks.  In the end, you are the only one who can determine whether or not you need the other medication now, but if you feel fine waiting it out, then I think that your psychiatrist and therapist will respect that.

This was a combination, Wellbutrin and Lexapro, that my Phych raved about and he had seen many patients with great results from it. He suggested it could not only help with the sexual side effects but also improve concentration. Wellbutrin is  chemically similar to a stimulant, so it will help boost up some of what the Lexapro depresses. Of course, listen to what your Dr has to say. From my perspective it is a route worth giving a try. The side effects of Wellbutrin are minimal and the possible positive effects are large.
