I don't like feeling relaxed
« on: January 29, 2012, 06:16:21 PM »
I don't know if this will make sense to anyone.
Usually I'm super anxious when I wake until I go to sleep, but sometimes in between I feel relaxed like a little too relaxed and it makes me panic.That's usually when I check my pulse 100 times, and it sometimes feels very weak so I start breathing quickly to speed it up. Has anyone experienced this before?Is it anxiety or maybe cause I'm used to feeling super anxious most day's I don't remember what it feels like to really be relaxed?It freaks me out.   B-;

It sounds silly when you say it out loud, but I'm the same way! It's like I'm so used to being in a high state of anxiety that I don't know what to do with myself when I feel "normal". Being relaxed is just really out of the ordinary for me. I'll realize I feel fine, then start freaking out about WHY I feel fine. It's really strange!

It's actually a really normal feeling to have.  I remember when I started on a really good med combo for my anxiety.  I was driving to work in the morning and just realized one day I wasn't feeling anxious.  I started trying to think about things that would make me worry.

I regret stopping those meds as I felt like a "normal" human being for the first time in my life.  They worked so well I thought it was safe to go off them-of course the anxiety and depression came back with a vengeance.

When you have those calm moments, embrace them.

A very curious thing about anxiety and worry, is that the mind learns (falsely) that if it detected a disaster, that the things which we previously did to avert the disaster need to be repeated. For example, if we in the past imagined some catastrophe, and worried ourselves silly and got our alarms to defcon 5, then the mind interprets that this is what saved us last time. Of course, the whole thing was imagined, but it amounts to faulty learning and conditioning, and I think that is why we can't relax. I personally feel that something horrible will happen if I don't stay hypervigilant and obsessive constantly. Of course, all of this amounts to self defeating behavior, and because it is impossible to relax once so conditioned, my goal has been to just slowly turn down the alert level (say from defcon 5 to yellow alert  :angel-smiley-006:)

lol this is exactly why i clicked on this thread. sometimes i feel really good, and my mind starts racing, and it brings my anxiety right back.

When I occasionally relax, I feel the same way. I am always super stressed out, so when I do try to relax my mind wanderers and I end up having the thoughts that make me anxious. Also, my muscles are always tense in my shoulders and tummy, so when I try relaxing those muscles it feels strange and unnerving.

I laughed when I read this. Not because it's ridiculous or anything, but because it's so true for me, and probably for many other people that suffer from any kind of anxiety disorder.

This past weekend I was so anxious that I decided to take another .25mg Xanax after the first dose an hour earlier (didn't feel like the first was working). About half an hour later, I was SO relaxed that I got scared. As I laid on the couch, I realized that my heart wasn't thumping- in fact, it was the first time in a while that I couldn't really feel or become super-aware of my heart beat in any part of my body. I had a hard time accepting this, but eventually passed out into a nap.

I remember that I was having a really good day and just thoroughly enjoying myself. Then, I realized that I wasn't anxious like I normally was. And it all went downhill from there. :laugh3:

It was like...wait, I'm supposed to be anxious, and then through all that thinking, I'd make myself anxious. I too find it slightly humorous. Here I am being exactly what I strive to be (normal!), and I work myself up over it!

I get this too! So glad I'm not the only one, I try and keep busy so I don't think of it! Then I end up thinking about it again and then I really feel my heart beat, then its the only thing I can feel! I know exactly how you are feeling!
