Am I being silly thinking this?
« on: January 28, 2012, 03:37:15 PM »
I moved out when I was 17 and went to Uni the following year so was in student accom. July 2010, I got evicted from my accom for being a party animal, basically. I moved home and my sister had moved into my room, so I was in the box room. Now long after that, my dad died. In September I moved back into another accom and after realising that being town wasn't good for me with the temptation to go out, I moved back home the following June.

My room (box room) was so cold over the past couple of months, so I slept in my mums bed (my mum sleeps on the couch!) And my anxiety hasn't been too bad. I decided to go back in my room on Wednesday night and woke up with terrible anxiety on the Thursday and Friday. As I've mentioned in another post, I can't even explain how I felt, it was weird. On Friday night I slept in my mums bed and woke up today feeling OK! I'm wondering if there is anything about the room that is making me think and feel this way, maybe because it reminds me of the time around when my dad died, I spent a lot of time in my room. Also, my dog will not go in my room, she stands outside it and cries but she will not come in there at all, even though I try and persuade her. This scares me too!

Am I being silly thinking a room would have anything to do with my anxiety?

Another possible reason is because the room is so cold, when I wake up, I ache all over and this makes me worry about my health.

Hi there,

Well, personally, I believe its possible that where we sleep and the environment of the place may have an affect on how we sleep or even the quality of sleep we get.  I think that if you go to sleep in a state of anxiety, you may be more likely to have nightmares, or awake in a state of anxiety.  The chemicals changes that happen in our brain during sleep are interrelated with mood.  So, if you feel anxious in the room, I think its reasonable to believe that this could be slightly affecting your quality of sleep and how you feel when you awake.

Also, the fact that the room is cold could be affecting you.  You may not realize is but if you aren't really comfortable you may not be getting as much of the deep sleep phases of sleep which really help us to feel rested when we awake and also helps with our mood.  That fact that the room is cold could also be one reason why your dog may not be a fan of the room.

Perhaps you could consider getting a heated blanket?  And maybe before you go to bed you could find an activity to put your mind at ease?  Like reading about a topic you really enjoy?
