Getting disability for anxiety?
« on: January 23, 2012, 04:28:56 PM »
I'm just curious, but can anxiety be a valid reason for getting disability benefits?

The reason I ask is I lost my job (working at home as medical transcriptionist) and now I'm on unemployment. For being on unemployment, you have to be actively looking for a new job. I have 2 issues. One is that my anxiety is back bringing me to an all time low. I can't even hike with my dogs without having panic attacks. It's rather annoying and has really hit me hard. So, finding any ole job is just not going to work, especially since the 1 thing that gave me peace (hiking) is now being overtaken by my anxiety. The other problem is that I pursued medical transcription because it was a way to earn an income from home. It was something to do while I dealt with my anxiety. However, after my last employment as an MT, I've found that I hate that profession and couldn't even make a living off of it.

I don't want to be so picky, but that line of work is so sketchy. It's hard to find a job if you have experience, let alone someone just starting out, aka me. Plus, most of the companies outsource and go through routines of hiring and firing to keep their employees from ranking up. There's no job security. So, if I'm going to go back into that profession, I really want to screen carefully.

But then, I don't want to get in trouble with the law for not applying to so little places.

Ugh, anyway, I'm not seriously considering applying for disability right now or in the near future. I'm hoping my anxiety will settle, and I'll be able to get a foothold in my life. But just for the sake of educating myself, I figured I'd ask.

I tried and appealed up to hearing level and was still denied. Although my lawyer thought I had a good case. But the Judge was a tough one. In the end they decided I was suitable for work that was low key and repetitive (the type I hate the most) LOL So I gave up and started working on anxiety through CBT and therapy. And now I'm in school and doing a lot better. Mind over matter. You can try but a lot depends on your age, and the severity. You pretty much have to prove that you can not function or do anything to help yourself. For example I said that I had hypochondria and would google symptoms and get upset about it, they used this against me by saying I could use a computer so I could work. They also said since I have a boyfriend I would be fine interacting with the general public. So it is very tough.

Peace is not a fashion statement, it's a lifestyle. An elusive force in which I hope to find in my personal torn mind.

I HEART CBT!!!

I wish you could get disability for anxiety.  Mine has never gotten to the point where it's caused me to lose a job, but it's definitely gotten to the point where I could use multiple weeks away from the office to get myself back together.

Hi Cheese  :action-smiley-065:, I know whats its like to going through this and I was denied to for disability and told them of my anxiety and hypochondria plus being at the western psych unit.  I guess we have to keep trying eather way for disability or trying for a job again one day.  And try to get great help.  I'm just lucky I have a very nice counselor to help me out, you will be OK.  Remember nothing is given to us we can't handle.  And when we go through it, we grow a bigger pair! :happy0151: .
