Who will support me financally?
« on: January 22, 2012, 07:03:16 PM »
I don't know what to do anymore.
I stated college last week, and its already too overwhemling for me.  Im going to drop out, because I cant focus on my studies. I am sad, I feel like I am stupid. I dont understand anything I am reading. I feel like a complete idiot.  I don't know what to do.

I've never had a real job, because I quit after the first day because I don't like to be around people.

I just realized just this very second, that I am never going to be able to get a real job, I know now that I am DISABLED mentally. And I need to know if I can get a disability check.

I need to live on my own, and get away from everything, but I cant afford it.  I cant get a job, I cant go to school.  I am so sick of this. I need to at least get my own place, cause I am bugging my mom, and Im old enough to get my own place and be on my own.

Does anyone get mental disability ? And how does this work?

i currently recieve a mental disability check but to be honest im trying to get off of it as fas as i can there are so many restrictions with it and worries
and it isnt anything you can really live properly off of if i were you i would just look into working from home or trying to start your own at home business or something that
will keep you close to home and you can still make a decent income

Hi Girl_21 -

I know that this sounds crazy with how you're feeling - but the best advice I've ever got and the best advice I believe anyone could give is to KEEP FIGHTING it.

Take all the energy that is going into feeling bad and use it to find whatever - and as much - help as you possibly can. Talk to school counselors (they're usually funded by your tuition dollars, so it could be free - it was for me when I was in college), find a doc outside of school, and if your doc isn't working or doesn't have a clear plan that you're seeing results from - find another doc.

Keep posting on here, lean on others with these problems for moral support. Check in with those in chat daily for a quick pick-me-up.

And tell yourself, every day, that you're going to get over this. Even if it feels like a huge lie. Even if it IS a huge lie for the first week/month/year.

I had to fight to keep myself in college almost every day... and then I had to fight my way through grad. school. Now I'm 32, with my own house/car/etc... and I keep fighting to keep working. Does it suck sometimes? Absolutely. But you have to keep fighting, because every day you don't fight it is another day when you're letting it creep more and more into your life.

I believe in you, and so does everyone else on these boards. Go get 'em!

Hi Girl_21,

I've been in the same situation as you before as well - although, I've worked and studied for a long time now. I remember being at my worst when I was fired from my job. It was devastating. I had no income coming through. I was ineligible for a regular youth allowance payment as I had been studying at university for far too long and was relying solely on my credit card to get through my daily expenses.

However, I managed to get back on my feet by cutting down my study load temporarily and finding a reasonably easy part-time job to support myself. I am currently and voluntarily unemployed now to shift my focus on graduating this year but I will be seeking a regular unemployment payment to support myself while I concentrate on my studies.

A few things to consider: I see no problem with exploring a disability payment or an unemployment payment. If you sincerely and realistically believe that you won't be able to find work and be comfortable with working then that should be a good option for you. On the contrary, I would try to implore you to look for a job to challenge your fears about working, if any. Of course, I don't know you personally but all I can say is that to give a job another shot before losing all hope on financially supporting yourself through those means.

You noted that you're an agoraphobic so it must be incredibly difficult to even consider a job or such an interaction. If you're doing any homework to help your own recovery, keep at it. Find a psychologist if you're really committed to finishing college and finding yourself a job - a good psychologist can really support your endeavour and even help you by creating an action plan with you.

Wishing you all the best.

I know it may be hard, but try not to give up just yet on school. I went through several years of school, and months before graduation, I let my anxiety consume me and left. I couldn't keep myself together. I couldn't be around people... I still haven't gone back, and I'm not the point I don't think I could. I spend most my days at home tending to the house and two kids, and trying to make a few bucks on-line. Its hard some days to think that if I could have just overcame my anxiety I could have finished.

First of all no one will have to support you financially, because once you learn how to overcome your anxiety you will be able to function again, study and get a job.

I would start by reading a book by claire weekes, this really helped me a lot and actually made me able to go back to school again and study. I`m in my last year now and I expect to get my masters degree by the end of the school year.

Also the things paul david (anxietynomore.co.uk) writes in his blogs are very helpful to me. I feel i`m slowly recovering from being housebound to a normal life again. And if I can do it, you can do it to!

Don`t tell yourself you can`t do things. Anxiety is not a mental illness. Saying yourself you`re ill will make things much worse; not better.
