Clean/Fresh Air Phobia?

We have a new tenant - it's actually someone we knew previously.  I've always suspected he has either an anxiety disorder and/or depression (I've got an anxiety disorder).  He always seemed to have issues with getting things done and becoming very overwhelmed with things.  He would always have this big fan running in his garage to re-circulate the air .....

Anyway, they just moved into our rental and he was complaining about a "smell".  Well, we went over there to see what was up and immediately, I knew that the smell was the new flooring we had put in.  Mind you, he had some dishes of charcoal and baking soda spread around, fans going, a HEPA fan going and all the windows in the  place open (mind you, it has been in upper 30's during the day here).  We told him that it's the flooring - he doesn't believe us.  He's having an environmental person come out to assess the situation.  Now, I'm finding out he has issues with "smells".  I'm not looking to go after him or anything, just trying to figure him out and if there is indeed such a phobia with smells.  It's like an obsession with him and it is pretty crazy.  I don't say this lightly either - I've had obsessions on occasion and anxiety, but this is way over the top. 

Just wondering if anyone has ever heard of anything like this.  I'd like to get more information on it so I can better understand it.
