Birth Control Recommendations?
« on: January 09, 2012, 07:32:49 PM »
So, as I've posted before here, I have had problems with major fears of blood clots....lots of other things too, but that is the most recent thing.
A few months back (Oct.) my fears of it got so bad that I decided to go off the birth control pill, since that was the source of my fear.
Well...I went off of it and I found that all my anxiety in general is much decreased.  So, after taking it for 8 years, I have determined that I will NOT be going back on the combined pill.
However, my fiance and I are wanting a little more time to just ourselves, so I am going to the doctor tomorrow to discuss birth control options. Since going off the pill we have used spermicide, which is fine, but I am sure probably not the most effective thing in the world. That being said, while we are not planning on kids right now, it wouldn't be awful if we were to become pregnant, just simply not what we planned.
So, any recommendations other than the pill? I'm interested in an IUD, but I have never given birth, so I don't know if my doctor will be cooperative.

Hi,
I considered getting an IUD a few months back as I'm in a long term relationship and was fed up with the pill, but my doctor warned me it would make my periods more heavier/painful as I had never had a baby (only 18 lol), she was willing to do it if I could put up with the symptoms, but I don't think I could my periods are horrendous enough as it is so its all personal preference and how bad your periods are in the first place.
There are contraceptive patches which can be used as they contain hormones in that stop you from getting pregnant.
Also there's of course the implant/injections, but I'm not sure how you'd feel about that, personally I didn't want it doing as the whole feeling of having something under my skin creeps me out like the implant, and I hate injections but like I said on the IUD its all personal preference :)
There's tons of different contraceptives that I'm sure you can discuss with your doctor.
Oh and also heres a link from the NHS website that might be of interest, its very informative and has information on different types of contraceptives. :)

If you're fiance is willing to wear a condom plus you use the spermicide that works really well.  That's what I used religiously for years and never got pregnant.  Also you could get fitted for a diaphram.  Just know with the diaphram if you gain or lose 10 pounds or more you have to be refitted for a new one.

I would do the IUD Mirena. Plus, if you decide you want to have a child you just have your doctor remove it.

ps, you don't need to have already had a child to have an IUD. My GYN once suggested it to me and said that it's great for people who don't want to take hormones. I don't use Birth Control now as I'm trying to get pregnant :)

I would suggest the Nuva ring. I started using it almost 10 yrs ago and my anxiety is way less than it was on the pill. The doctor explained to me that with the pill you get a rush of hormones when you take it and it tapers off over the 24 hour period of time before your next dose, and with the Nuva ring it's a low steady and constant flow of hormones, no ups and downs. I felt the difference with my anxiety within a couple of months, the main reason why I was originally put on birth control was because of a hormone imbalance and irregular and heavy periods, and now I barely have one and it lasts for much fewer days. I hope this helps and good luck.
