Fear of Driving--actually getting better!
« on: January 09, 2012, 05:28:30 PM »
My driving anxiety started by having a panic attack driving over a large bridge about 9 years ago. that transformed into a general fear of driving long distances, because I didn't know if there would be a bridge somewhere, which just morphed into general anxiety . I would be anxious the entire time and have days of anticipatory anxiety if I knew I had to drive somewhere. I pretty much stopped drving for anywhere longer than an hour, especially on the highway.

I still don't drive over large bridges, but yesterday I drove 2-1/2 hours each way from my home in upstate NY to Long Island and back with my daughter in the car.

First, the meds help! (one day maybe I can do it without them.) I also used several different approaches. Even though I drove thru crazy NJ, which is totally unpredictable (and I also chose to drive by the Giants game even though I knew the traffic might be horrible, but it's the only way without a bridge!)

Anyway, that is the first time I've done that in six years. Six years! And I made it and I didn't freak out! I had moments of some anxiety, but i let it float away. (There are many elevated roads and even a mid-size bridge.)

i just wanted to share that things can change and you can get better--I'm still workign on it.

I also wanted to share because, unfortunately, I don't have anyone close to me who really gives a crap. My family asked, why did you go thru NJ? I said BECAUSE I DON'T DRIVE OVER BRIDGES. (I seriously haven't driven over a bridge in  9 years and they know this, they also know I don't like to drive but instead of understanding they nag me that I don't visit, and ask dumb questions like that. I'm so sick of it) She said" well, in my opinion, you should get over that." I answered, "Well, I didn't ask your opinion." Plus, my husband did not say one work about it.

Sharing and venting! things can better even if you have to do it on your own.

CONGRATS on doing what you haven't done for sooooooooooooooooo long - it is a really big big deal as I can relate with my own driving issues.

I'm starting to slowly get out on the busier roads I have TOTALLY IGNORED for the last 8 months and it is such a feeling of accomplishment.

KEEP ON TURCKN' (lol) and YOU SHOULD BE SOOO PROUD.

Take Care & God Bless!
