Cigarettes are about to go away...
« on: January 08, 2012, 08:00:42 AM »
After 17 years of smoking, I will be quitting tomorrow.  I'm scared and nervous, but I can't wait to get rid of these things.    I think my hardest time is going to be at work when I get stressed.   Here's hoping for a strong will and some good luck! :)

I haven't quit yet.  Today is my last day.  I'm a little nervous about tomorrow (a Monday with no smoking) but I know I can do it.   Thanks for the congrats! :)

Awesome... But, I do want to say something about the "Monday Quitting"... I always start "new" things on Monday's... it's the beginning of a new week, so it seems perfect. In reality, Monday's SUCK!!! So, I think, for me anyway, I'm going to start doing new things on a Wednesday (half-way through the week is always exciting), or Friday (even better... the week is almost over!!!). Just a thought... but I am really proud of you... I've been smoking for 7-8 years... I hate it, it's disgusting... but I also love those D*** things!!! Good luck and please let me know...

LOL! I figure, Mondays already suck, so its the best day to quit (plus, I will be busy at work instead of sitting at home thinking about cigarettes).  Thanks so much for the support, and yes, I will post about my progress. :)

Here's some encouragement and a success story:  I had been a smoker for 30 years of my life.  Before going to bed one evening, I thought to myself, "heck, I do everything I can to stay healthy, why am I still smoking".  So, I asked my husband that once I went to bed would he please go outside and get rid of my ashtray, lighter and any evidence that I was a smoker (I've never smoked inside my home).  Well, he did just that, and the next morning I woke up feeling great, telling myself I was a non-smoker!  I quit cold turkey and have been smoke free now for 1 year and 5 months!!!!    Prior to quitting, do yourselves a favor and read "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking" by Allen Carr.  It's a quick read and I think must do something within your subconcious, because I haven't picked up a cig since!  There have been times when I think "gosh, would be nice to have a cig" and then I stop and remind myself that I don't smoke and then go on to thinking of other things.

It can be done!  You can do it and you'll feel soooo much better once you have!  It's amazing how my sense of smell has changed!!!!  I continued to take money out of my checking each week to "Act" as if I was using it to spend on cigs and after a year I had enough money to take myself to Vegas and enjoy a great weekend!  What a reward!!!!!

Good luck, and let me know how it goes!!!!

Hi Nightmare!   I use to be a smoker also.  Been quit 3 years this April.   It wasn't really hard to do since I wanted to quit so bad I think that made it easier.  If you want to quit bad enough you shouldn't have a really hard time.   I went from smoking in the house to smoking outside only. Then just got me these seven day patches from Wally World and used them and havn't smoked since.   But I always kept 4 cigs and a lighter in my bookcase.  But never touched them.  I think it helped me with knowing they were there and I didn't get all panicky and if It got to bad that I couldnt' stand it then I'd have them to smoke.  I kept them in that bookcase for prolly bout 5 or 6 months.  But I quit and It's one of the best things I've done.  Such a huge difference in my life.   And Kathie is not kidding when you quit smoking your sense of smell changes alot.   Now the smell of pickles almost make me vomit.   :laugh3:   And be sure come back here let us know how your doin or if you need some pep talk.   I know you can do it.  Good Luck!

Ok, first day as a nonsmoker!  I'm missing my morning cigarette right now, but I know that this is the beginning of kicking a habit/addiction.   I can do this!

In about one hour, it will have been a full day since my last cigarette! (My last one was at 10pm last night).   It's been a little rough, but I am so proud to have made it this far.   Here's hoping tomorrow is even better.  :)

Thanks!  :)

Well, I took the patch off last night before I went to bed (never had a craving for a smoke when I was sleeping LOL), and put another one on this morning.  Now, I'm feeling all shaky and nervous.   I checked a drug information reference (not Google) and it says that some side effects are dizziness and hypertension.  I'm so not checking my BP right now, because I'm finally over that obsession.   Any patch users experienced this?

Hi Nightmare!  I'd say the shaky and nervous feelings are part of the withdrawl symptoms.   I wore the patches and I don't remember them doing that to me,  I don't think I took mine off at night though either.   I believe I changed mine everymorning when I got up.   But it's been three years and my memory stinks lol.   Hope you doing well today and hang in there.

The shakiness and nervousness wore off about 30 minutes after I posted this morning, so I'm thinking that it was the nicotine surge.   I really want a cig right now, but it's just boredom.   Good thing I don't have any in the house and that I don't feel like going anywhere!  LOL

Congratulations nightmare!  I've been smoke free now for a year and 5 months.  I found the best thing I did for myself was to stay proud of myself with each day I was smoke free!  It's kind of like losing weight...you see the pounds come off and you want to continue!  Well, picture all those nasty smells going away, your lungs clearing up, and all the money you'll save by becoming a non smoker!

You are doing a fabulous job!!

Thanks everyone! Today is tough...its my first weekend as a nonsmoker.  There's a lot of downtime which means I'm thinking about cigs more.  But I'm on day 6....hell week is almost over!
