Is this exercise for sleep the simplest remedy for insomnia?
« on: December 06, 2011, 02:26:24 PM »
I want to share with you a very simple exercise for sleep that helps me to fall asleep whenever I am having trouble sleeping. I don't know if anybody else has ever tried this simple exercise for sleep. If yes, I would love to know your experiences with it and also with any other simple remedy for insomnia that you prefer.

When I am unable to sleep at night, I notice three things: -

i) There are lots of thoughts racing through my head.

ii) Due to anxiety, the muscles in my body have become sort of stiffer than usual (check it out yourself when you are anxious about something--the muscle tone increases, so that your body becomes sort of stiffer than usual).

iii) My breathing has become shallower than usual.

All I do is to make a conscious effort to reverse the above! Here is what I do: -

I consciously and voluntarily relax all the muscles in my body--one by one--from my head to my toes. I make my body very relaxed--so relaxed as though I am drifting and floating on water, or as if I am experiencing weightlessness in outer space.

While doing this I take slow, long and deep breaths. I drop all thought from my mind and concentrate on my breathing. As soon as any thought pops up in my mind, I silently tell myself, "oh well", and then I concentrate on my breathing again. I focus my attention on my nostrils and the air going in and coming out. This helps me to drop all thoughts from my mind--one by one--until my mind becomes blank.

Once my breathing is deep and slow, and all the muscles in my body are limp and relaxed, and there are no thoughts racing in my head, I have consciously and voluntarily simulated a state similar to sleep. And I soon fall asleep! That is all there is to this simple exercise for sleep. You might even use it in conjunction with some other remedy for insomnia and/or anxiety.

Hope this simple exercise for sleep helps somebody.
