The Dead Arm effect?
« on: November 23, 2011, 04:19:02 PM »
So ive been doing some CBT lately and I have been learning alot about my anxiety symptoms. However there is one symptom that I get which I was hoping someone could shed some light on, it happens out of nowhere with no anxiety "Which ive learned from CBT is fairly common".

In any case I will try to give the most reasonable explanation as it is hard to explain.

It usually happens only in my left arm, and what happens is i'll have both arms resting on the table, looking directly at the computer. Although this can really happen anywhere, it tends to happen more in front of the computer.  Suddenly my left arm feels completely weak, when I try to move it, it just doesn't feel right. My coordination and grip is off, I keep relating this feeling to possible "Stroke" but I know I shouldn't do that.  It's like im constantly becoming detached from my left arm. I also get this sort of "Funny Bone" feeling when I try to move it in this state, you know when you hit your elbow on something and there is that terrible ticklish feeling inside your arm? It's sort of like that except much weaker, and the funny bone feeling seems to come in bursts.  It also twitches, for no apparent reason in this state.

Usually after 1-2 hours the symptoms dissapear, but I get very worried when they occur and can't seem to relate these symptoms back to the fight or flight response.

 What is this? Any advice/opinions?

yeah I get the dead arm and leg much more often when I'm stressed.  Been happening a lot lately with my left leg.  This has happened to me before.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.

my entire left side can do this at random times, but im usually thinking "hey, my arm doesnt feel weak" and then BAM! it happens
using a computer can cause a lot of nerve and muscle problems, so be sure to limit the use and to be practicing proper ergonomics.
google that word and see how improper your computer habits more-than-likely are
sounds like a nerve thing, to me
