Nervous about Ativan addiction
« on: November 12, 2011, 11:16:30 PM »
From Nov 2010 until early October 2011, I took Ativan PRN (3 times a week at most), never more than 0.5mg a day.  Took this for dizziness and the occasional panic attack and i was good.  From early Oct until now, I've taken it almost daily at this dose, and sometimes twice a day (dr. said twice a day is average anyhow) because my symptoms have been so unbearable.
Few weeks ago I started 5mg Celexa and just worked my way up to 10mg Wednesday.  I've only taken Ativan once a day since Wed. but i have bad health anxiety and addiction is one of my fears.  No history of addiction (to anything), but still, i worry.  Obviously one reason i started Celexa was to decrease the need to take Ativan so much but once Cel. kicks in good, can i quit Ativan cold turkey or will i need to taper?  Thanks.

P.S. nobody ever found an organic cause for dizziness, which incidentally is getting slightly better since starting Celexa :)

2010 I started on Ativan for major anxiety. I started with 2.5 nightly. Like you they than added Celexa 10mg. I slowly worked my way up to 40 mg.  It took awhile for the Celexa to work completely which is normal. So I have been on Ativan nightly for quite awhile. Once I felt really comfortable with my progress I went down slowly on Ativan just to be sure I didn't get any discontinuation anxiety. But no where was the Dr. ever concerned about addiction as I had no addiction HX myself or in my family. I still take .5 at night and plan to continue my progress till I do not take it at all.
My DR. has told me .5 is a really really low dose, even taking it once or twice a day. You can stay on that low dose for as long as you need and just to be safe as to not trigger any discontinuation syptoms, drop down in stages. My Dr. also told me that the Celaxa, once working well, should help with any discontinuation symptoms anyway. So you not even get any. I havent so far(knock on wood) and I have been on Ativan since 6/2010.

That was my situation, but I know there are better experts on this site who may have better info.
