I'm in my mid 50's.
I have had symptoms of anxiety and other things all my life. I have learnt lots of helpful strategies and have been fortunate in the psychologists I have worked with.
 I like the quote from Eleanor re facing the fear. That has been one of my strengths. Presenting the fear with facts.
I used to be highly anxious every waking moment, had panic attacks every day and sometimes all day and sleep wasn't too good.
These days I am consciously calm most of the time and panic attacks are infrequent, although I trigger into anxiety fast. I find writing like this difficult.
I think hormones can really muddle things and early life experiences play a part in developing anxiety d/o.
I work at getting as much out of life as I can. I really liked the poem about its my life. That's my attitude, there are a lot of things I am not able to do but there are heaps of things I can do and that's what I focus on.

Hi all.

I've had anxiety about everything for much of my life, but it didn't become truly disruptive until my late 20's, when I basically found myself crippled by some form of social anxiety. An odd development for a guy who'd been mildly outgoing up to that point in his life. Since then, I've been on and off medications (Paxil, Prozac, Wellbutrin, Klonopin) with varying results, and been in and out of therapy sessions with limited success.  And during the times in between, I also practiced the majority of the home remedies like yoga, meditation, exercise, improving my diet, deep breathing, bashing my head into a brick wall (Okay, not so much the last one). 

Now I'm in my early 40's and still dealing with anxiety, but now because of recent life events it has taken an obsessive health-related turn - particularly towards cardiovascular-based fears. (There's also the random free-floating everyday phobias of earthquakes, gas leaks, roving bands of wild coyotes. Okay, not so much the last one.)

Not currently taking any meds - well, none for the anxiety anyway - but thinking that getting on some might be a good idea.

I'm 21. Looking back I think I have always had anxiety issues but I didn't realize it until I had a panic attack back in 2008 when I was 18.. then worrying about having another panic attack made me have GAD.

I am 56 and will soon be 57 which adds to my anxiety and panic. I had my first attack when I was 42. I.  have been going thru menopause for the same amount of time of which I am pretty sure aids the problem.  Would like to think someday I may outgrow this.

I'm absolutely positive that it's been pointed out before, but the poll excludes anyone who is 21 years old. I'm 29 and very relieved to be in the "sweet spot," as it were, and hope to waste many lonely hours here that could be spent pursuing things like meaningful relationships and creative and professional fulfillment.

30. I am among the other 45% 22-32 yr olds here. I started out thinking i was having a heart attack... multiple times. Still do sometimes. This all started in March of 2009. It's on again, off again...

I think I've always had anxiety issues but it's gotten much worse since I was 24 or 25 when I was diagnosed with PTSD

I'm 20. I've been having occasional problems with anxiety since I was about 16, but they only recently began to escalate. I think it's because I'm under a lot of stress this year; I'm in my first serious relationship, the stress of college has gone a level or two up (I'm much more busy than I used to be), and on top of it I'm starting a birth control that no doubt messes with my hormones.
