I have not taken any psychoactive medication since Dec. 2007 when I took my last klonopin.  I was on it for many years, and tried a variety of ADs during the same time period but they didn't seem to help me (or cause me any great distress).  I am not sure what the future holds; so far the balance has weighed in favor of continuing to manage anxiety through non-drug methods, but every day brings a new decision tree.

Hi All,

I have had rising anxiety levels for the last 6 months. The original ailment was dysthemia, a form of depression which I have had since many years. My doc put me on varying doses of escilatopram and clonezepam. My anxiety started peaking and day to day life became very difficult. Most of my relationships became unstable. Interacting with people became a nightmare. Even minor changes in the doses were making things worse. I Wasn't sleeping properly for months. Dependance on pills increased and there was no way out except to take more and to cope with the side effects. And a small fortune was spent on doc visits and medicines.

I did some research and found some some herbs and other medicines  which have been around for thousands of years. I read extensively and the risk seemed worth taking.

The below worked/ works for me and my symptoms are improving. It is a vast relief to be getting my old life back in a better form.
Here is my 1 month experience - hope you find it useful.

Took a few weeks away from work and away from people.
Started weaning off both pills. I used a paper cutter to slice the pills into smaller pieces and started reducing the dosage gradually.
As my anxiety peaked even more, memory loss set in and it became confusing to know and remember which pill to take and in which dose. It may help to cut pills and neatly pack them in advance so once weaning off starts there is no scope for taking the wrong dosage. Once the weaning off starts your thinking will get disrupted for some time. It is best to organise and label your meds so there is no scope for relying on memory.

As the pill dosage reduced,so did the descent into absolute hell.  this happened for a couple of weeks. I began to hallucinate frequently. Many other symptoms followed - aggression, irritability, inappropriate behaviour, mood swings, insomnia, feelings of depression, suicidal thoughts etc. I kept going, relying on relaxation tapes, meditation, breathing exercises and drinking a lot of water to help cope.

After the last day of the pills was past, I drank a lot of water for 2 days to flush out the remnants from my body.

Then I started taking the below herbal tablets. Please read up thoroughly on them so you know what you are getting into. IMPORTANT - TAKE THEM ONLY AFTER COMPLETELY STOPPING EXISTING MEDICINES. THEY MAY REACT ADVERSELY WITH SSRIS/ BENZODIAZEPINES AND YOU MAY END UP WITH MORE SIDE EFFECTS.

A) Geriforte tablets - Manufacturer says this helps treat dysthemia, depression and various forms of anxiety.
B) Mentat tablets - Manufacturer says this helps boost memory and other forms of brain function.
Read up on these and go through research papers on the internet to know other peoples accounts.

My anxiety is now much better. My depression is easing too.
Am sleeping normal hours and wake up automatically refreshed.
In my opinion, this has so far, worked out to be the best treatment for anxiety. I tried many different ways before to reduce anxiety but nothing could be sustained for more than a few days. This is simple and very effective.

Tips
Make sure any existing tablets/ pills are completely stopped.
Dosage is mentioned on the tablet containers. I take 2 of these 2-3 times a day. No known adverse side effects or reactions from overdosing.
Walk briskly for 30-45 minutes each day to keep blood circulation going.
Avoid spicy foods/ anything that is hard to digest and drink a lot of water.
The symptoms associated with weaning off were maximum for the first 3-5 weeks and started reducing beyond that.
Use meditation/ relaxation tapes to relax.
Avoid getting into any arguments or confrontations with anyone. Period. It is just not worth it and will make things worse. You wont be your normal self in this state.

This is my way of sharing my experience with all those in this state of despair not knowing what to do.
No harm in trying alternative medicines.
If they do not work, one can go back to the old ones!
Another note of caution.  Make sure to stop conventional medicines completely first before taking these or any other herbs.

All the best and God bless !

Thank you for this post. I am going to look into this! Do you know how much these tablets usually cost? Where would be the best place to order them?

I am just now starting meds.. I tried natural remedies and relaxation techniques to no avail. I am on Celexa for anxiety. I started at 20mg  but had awful side effects :sick0002: so I've cut back to 10mg and it seems to work much better  , slight nausea but I've been on it for less than a week so hopefully that'll go away. My doc also thinks she may put me on something fast acting for when I have panic attacks.

I've been on medication for 17 years. for mental health and anxiety. dignossed as schizoaffective bipolar type in 1995. I took 2mg ativan for 12 years. Was taken off of it in 2009. In feb of 2012 I came off allot of medication because of stage 3 kidney disease. Life has been really hard since coming off ativan. almost impossible since I have come off a bunch of other meds. Right now I take two blood pressure meds, respirdal, low mg of zoloft for anxiety, nurotin for restless leg syndrom and 10 mg ambien about 10 times a month for sleep. may seem like allot of medication but I use to take 14 pills a day which led to my kidney disease.

I'm just starting new meds. I was on 10 mg Lexapro daily but it wasn't doing anything for me.

My psychiatrist had me slowly transition from Lex to 150 mg Zoloft.

We'll see how it works! Right now I'm having some startup side effects.
so let me ask...you were on 10mg of lexapro & went to 150mgs zoloft??? or are you starting at a lower dose of zoloft? I ask because I am in transition between the two also and I went to 25mgs zoloft from 10 of lexapro

Paxil 20 mg. 18 years
Ativan as needed 2 weeks
Had a Anxiety breakthrough after 18 years 3 weeks ago so  have increased Paxil dose to 30 mg. 0213 night  and a target in three weeks for 40 mg. Ativan is taken as needed usually  1/2 tablet day and 1 full tablet to help sleep at night.. This last episode  was imediatley followed by a horrible depression with scary thoughts and all super bummer. Hopimg the increase dose will level thimgs out. Stopped caffine and drink decaf tea. Soon i will be back to my normal self  for all things change .

Well I started with Celexa ... worked up from 5mg to over 30mg
then added risperidone .25mg 2x a day
then after 9 months of continuing to get worse
20mg lexpro (is that the nex gen celexa)
for 6 months
then wind down and on to effexor working my way up to 150mg each morning ...  plus 3mg invega in evening.
that balanced out and was ok for 6-9 months.   then endocrinologist had problem with weight so got of invega
and added 75mg  of effexor in the evening + 25mg trazadone to help me sleep
currently having breakthru everything so may be getting effexor poop out  ... but sitting at
150mg effexor xr in morning
75mg effexor xr in evening
building up to 25mg seroquel at night for sleep issues   should never have touched the invega

Hello-- I've been on Zoloft for about 6 Yrs..--50 mg.--which pooped out on me I've had two recent increases up to 87.5 mg--working my way to 100 mg. with positive hopes that I can kick this anxiety in the butt!!!
I also take 1/4 of 3.75 mg Traxene as needed in the morning and afternoon- and a whole one before bed... Yep.. Thats my cocktail at the moment!

i'd like to learn more about zoloft "pooping out."  i'm wondering about that with me.  if i need to increase more after 10 years at 25-50 mg and now 3 months at 75 mg.  i felt better until about a week ago when physical symptoms of anxiety returned.

Hello,

I used to be on 40mg of Celexa.
I was recently prescribed 20mg Celexa but due to my anxiety about medications I discontinued taking it. I was then given 20mg Paxil and I've cut it down to 10mg. Although I feel I need 20mg, I'm terrified of side effects. My panic attacks seem different; my whole body burns and tingles all over...I don't like that!

I would prefer to try and deal with my anxiety by myself...

Maybe because of having 8 meds combined with eachother,  instead of one or two at the proper amount, (a high enough mg.),  for you, is one thought. I would just want one, of the right med for me, in a high enough dose for me.

I am currently taking 10mg of citalopram. It is generic for Celexa. About three weeks ago I was taking 20mg. I cut my dose in half as for the last couple years it's seemed my anxiety has been getting worse and worse. One of the side effects of citalopram is anxiety so I thought perhaps that may have been the cause thus the decision to cut my dose in half. So far not much change. Some days my anxiety is manageable but others I don't even want to leave the house to go to work. I really don't like the way the medication makes me feel, it seems it kind of dampens my mood and just not feel right. I've tried cymbalta, (back before it was prescribed for pain or whatever it is they use it for these days) lexapro, and finally just stuck with citalopram. All three meds felt the same so I just stuck with the last one. But none of them really helped much with my anxiety just makes it bare able at best most days. Does anyone have any recommendations of something else I should try? My doctor thinks that upping my dose would help, but I think it's the medication itself just not working. Thanks in advance.

Currently 150 mg Effexor, 10mg Prozac (just about done weaning off), 25 mg seroquel IR at night, and .5 or 1mg's of ativan as needed. I usually don't take the ativan more than once every few weeks, unless i'm having a really hard time, then it might be every day for a week or so.
