The reasons for RECs?
« on: August 14, 2011, 03:02:53 PM »
We all know what a REC is. Somebody likes your post, they click the thumb icon, you get another REC. But what exactly is the purpose of them? I have yet to come across a post that I have seen that somebody has clicked on the REC icon. Maybe I am missing something here. Is there anything behind a RECed post at all? Anyway of knowing what posts have been RECed so we may read them. Or is it simply just a way of giving somebody a little bit of credit for posts they have made? With actually showing what great posts they have made. If you know what I mean. Like Sixpack has nearly 100 RECs. But we have no idea how to find any of those 100 great posts. All a bit of a mystery to me. Maybe GG can explain if there is anything behind it, other than another number under your name.

I'm a little confused about this too.  I may make 3 post in one day and get a REC...I have no idea which post got the REC.  Two may have been completely off the mark but one was good.  I have no way of figuring out which one is the good one.  It would be helpful to know this as it would help the poster recognize which post hit home for some and which ones aren't so great.  I simply would like to know which posts help and which ones don't.  Someone may see the REC and go to the wrong post and wonder how I could get a REC for something so way off the mark.  Hence, I don't really pay that much attention to RECs other than I am always surprised when I do notice and see that I have received one.  It just baffles me as I never know why or which post was read that got it.  The most baffling ones are when I haven't posted in a day or two and get a REC...LOL  That completely confuses me.  Obviously, someone has read something I wrote a few days back and has given it a REC, but which one...LOL  I don't know if there is anyway of notifying us which post receives them or if it really is necessary at all to have RECs.  I truly think that everyone on here does their best to help others and different points of view are all worthy of attention.   So why have them at all especially if we don't know which post is the deserving one.

Don't get me wrong, I definitely take it as a complement and I am grateful that someone gets something from what I post, but it doesn't change the fact that I have no clue as to which post is the one that has made an impact.

I'd really like to know an answer as well.  Otherwise, REC's are pointless -- as much as we all like credit for something.  If a post is REC'd, then we should have the privilege of viewing it and posting it's link for others to read when relevent and helpful.

Can someone please answer? A mod maybe?

Even the Mods don't know the answer. Would only be GG, the owner, who would be able to answer.

i don't think rec's are pointless if you don't know from which post they were given.  But it would be cool if we knew which ones were "thumbed UP"

Well then it's just a virtual popularity contest. You could say "this person posted the most things that people found interesting/useful" but why is that important information? Just to make judgments based on how many thumbed-up posts they received?

Personally, I also think the "karma" function is pointless unless you know which posts are "recommended" -- that way you can share the important information with others and it's not just a popularity/judgment function.

And it rolls about like this: Unconscious ignorance, conscious ignorance, conscious competence, unconscious competence. Then it repeats. Nobody is ever truly a master at anything, there is always something to learn, either by mind or body.

It is certainly not a popularity contest. Although it would really help to know which post received the rec. It does help to know that for example Cuch has 50 posts, so you know he writes some good posts and if he replies to one of yours, you should read it closely and take heed of any advice he gives

right.   I agree it would be nice if we could tell which ones were rec'd though.  I don't know if GG has the "button" that would allow the rec to be shown on the post though----ie this post has received a rec.  Some programs only have certain things you can do.  The program running this site may only have the option to show that the person has posted a number of rec's over time and not which posts were rec'd.
