Aspergers
« on: June 01, 2007, 05:11:27 AM »
Now my psychologist thinks I may has aspergers disorder.  Even if I say I don't exactly fit certain aprts of it, she seems like she "wants" it to be true no matter what I say.  I looked up info on it online and I do seem to fit most parts of it, but I don't have bad motor skills, don't have speech problems, and when I get to know someone or someone talks to em first, I socialize fine...  This really all started where she could figure out why I get along better with teenagers (which is obviously not good since I am not one) than women closer to my age.  But I think it's more that I didn't socialize much in high school and I am still kind of stuck wanting to be at that age.  By choice more than by being forced to.  I would "rather" not be so serious and so I get along with younger people.  I ahve never had a job, thus never needing to grow up and take responsibility exactly.

Anyway whether it is labeles as aspergers or not, the only solution is apparently learn social skills.... so I don't know why she is so insistant on whether to label it as that or not.  I need help with the solutions to problems, not having a name for it.

I do sometimes have trouble with empathy and I do have only a few interests and obsess with them.  I took some online test that listed me as "maybe" having it.  To even get to the maybe area you must score a 33 or above and I got a 35 so I was right at the bottom edge.

I've been diagnosed with this, I fit most of it.  No motor skills, no speech issues, but everything else.

It's just a label, it means nothing to me.  I think the solution is to realize if anything is wrong with you, what it is and how to defeat it.

Of course, if I knew that, I'd be the richest man in America right now :)

There are several different disorders on the autism spectrum, did she say why she thought it was specifically aspergers and not something else since you feel you don't fit the category very well?   I would ask her alot more questions about her reasoning.  It could be that she just wants to have an aspergers case (not saying this is definately true) because aspergers has gotten to be kind of a "popular" diagnosis lately.

She acted all excited in diagnosing it like she wanted it to be that, so I am tempted to think she just wanted to diagnose it.  But I fit it in some ways such as I relate well with teenagers and I am 30 and that isn't a great thing.  lol  But I think that side of it is that I have never had a job and just my personality in general. I can be mature, but I guess I get bored sometimes talking to more mature adults.  Other than that I don't even remember why she said I fit it now.  Now my pcp basically thinks I have bipolar type 2.... whatever it's called.

Correct diagnosis is very guelly and time consuming to get.  I was thought of other things as well before they finally got it right.  Now I'm doing real good again.

Hang on hun.  you'll get there.

I know three people with aspergers.  All were different from each other.  Not socializing in a proper manner was one thing they had in common.  I different ways of course.  The other is obsession.  It is huge for them.  They tend to be RUDE and don't care about being rude.  They don't see that they are being rude.  Two that I know have fun with being rude.  It's a game for them.  Intimidating, taunting, aggressors, proud of their behavior.  One is aware and is taking action in changing.  She doesn't really understand why she does what she does.
Aspergers is not autism, but under the umbrella so to say.  A cousin to it.  I have dealt and truly survived their behaviors.  One time or another, they had tried to harm me physically, verbally and emotionally.
I would be cautious with this diagnosis.  I would also question more on why she thinks this for you.  Read up on it and not just do an on line test.  This is very important that you fully understand what aspergers is and to see if you truly have it.
I was diagnosed with borderline personality.  I fit some of it, but, not close to text book.  Come to find out.  I don't have it.  I questioned it, read up on it, and got two other opinions.  I don't have it.
