Fear of Fainting
« on: July 12, 2011, 07:23:06 PM »
Hello all!
I am a 31 yr old female who has been suffering with anxiety for the past 16 years. I have been on and off medications over these years, but after seeing that different medications didn't really help me, I have decided to go it alone. I have been doing fairly well lately, until a few days ago. For reasons unknown, I passed out early one morning in our kitchen. This is probably the fourth time I've passed out over many years; however, and I forgot to mention, I suffer from hypochondriasis (health anxiety), GAD, and panic disorder. Because of my health anxiety, every little sensation of dizziness or shortness of breath (no doubt from my increased level of anxiety) reminds me of fainting the other day. I begin to panic and am scared to death I will faint again. I constantly think that maybe there is a serious underlying problem, although I regularly have checkups and have no health concerns. Can someone please give me some advice on what I can do to get over this fear? Thanks to all who read and/or reply!

I am also afaid of fainting. What I do when I get dizzy, light headed, anything that reminds me of how it felt when I was fainting I breathe in deeply through the nose and slowly out the mouth about 5-10 times. If the dizziness doesnt go away I put my head between my knees and continue the deep breathing. I stay hydrated aswell for reassurance. Keep your mind off of that anxiety by watching tv or cleaning the house.
Im not on meds and not seeing a therapist or anything. ive had this fear of fainting for a year and have been going through this alone. I have an appointment though soon so if youd like, if I find out anything else to eliminate this fear I can let you know?
