Natural Remedies?
« on: June 19, 2011, 01:33:07 AM »
Hi everyone!

I just wanted to see if any one had any recommendations for natural remedies for panic attacks. I'm not big on medications (plus I'm broke and don't have health insurance lol). I read about Passion Flower a couple weeks ago and decided to give it a try. I really love it! I take it twice a day, but I noticed it really only seems to work if I take it before any sort of panic sets in. If I'm already panicking and I take it, it has no effect.

I've also tried some calming teas. I tried a Kava root tea, but that just made me feel like I was going to fall asleep and never wake up. lol really scary.

Does anyone else have any sort of herb or tea they use that helps?

Thanks!

I use a product called Rescue Remedy.  It's a mixture of a few calming ingredients.  It's just 2 sprays on the tongue and can be used pretty much as often as needed.  Yoga also helps me a lot.  When I feel a bad panic attack coming on out comes the yoga mat!  Also, start eating GABA rich foods.  Lots of whole grains, brown rice, spinach, nuts etc.

Teena, everyone is going to have a lot of different things that work for them....my suggestions are staying completely away from anything with caffeine, and also a good vitamin including Vitamin B12.  Exercise is Key!!!!

If Kava is too strong, you might want to try Chamomile tea.  It's relaxing but won't knock your socks off:)

Liana, I just bought the Rescue Remedy! Thanks for the suggestion! We'll see how it work.s :)

Thanks, Kathie! I've been taking a B Complex recently, but I don't know that all of it is getting absorbed (TMI: my urine is bright yellow after I take it...unless that is normal lol). I also have to try to stay motivated to work out...I'm getting there though!

I'll try Chamomile, Heather. Thanks! :)

I find that meditation and long hot baths help me with my anxiety.  As far as herbs etc I have heard that Gaba, Kava, and Valerian also help; I am in the process of obtaining these herbs and doing more research.  Just like with any medication, it is recommended to do research about the side effects and interactions with other medications.

There are several companies that bottle up the best of all the mentioned ingredients and sell them with great success.  Not going to mention any in particular, but I have tried a couple, and they did work okay, at best, for me.  I think it was a placebo effect.  I needed science to help me through my last severe episode! :laugh3:

I feel that natural remedies, along with proper diet and exercise, and having a positive attitude may be enough to help one that suffers mild to moderately.

It's not what's happening to you now or what has happened in your past that determines who you become. Rather, it's your decisions about what to focus on, what things mean to you, and what you're going to do about them that will determine your ultimate destiny.

The bright yellow urine is common if you're taking a B Complex. Basically, you're body is getting too much B's and has to excrete them and they do this through your urine.

Exercise is # 1 - and many others have already stated that but I wanted to stress it more. Exercise, enough of it, can act like an anti-depressant meaning it can help with the chemicals in your brain that an AD would help with. I always aim for a 30 min work-out everyday, even if it's a brisk walk with the dog. Def. is helpful and I've lost some weight too  :happy0151:

Positive thinking, relaxation techniques and some herbal supplements like the B's and Calcium/Magnesium can be helpful too, along with Vit. D. Before taking anything though it's best to talk to your dr.

Exercise and meditation, as mentioned, are tops. It is a matter of incorporating them into your daily routine. Music is the starter for me. I get at least one hour exercise daily and 15 minutes am and pm meditation every day. Exercise became my hobby as I learned most every kind.

In addition, am almost all vegetarian which again turned into a hobby dreaming up dishes. Drink lots of green tea. Don't forget plain water.
