Questioning Nursing school and I'm graduating in July!
« on: June 02, 2011, 11:30:03 PM »
My mind has been racing since about 7.... I have a clinical rotation in the CCU this weekend and I'm scared to death. My mind can't handle it, it's making me sick.... All I think about is trach's, vents, death, the whole 9 yards. It's got me mquestioning whether I'm able to do this. If nursing is really my calling!! I don't want to look like a complete damn fool when I tell them I'm scared!! :(

I've wanted this since I was 15! Why am I freaking out!?! :(

Maybe when you were 15 you did not know what nursing all entailed!

It takes a certain type of person to be a nurse in my opinion!  My stepmother was an ER nurse!  I think nurses must have patience, courage, compassion, a caring nature, and a true desire to help people (sick people).

I would imagine it be hard for one with an anxiety disorder to be a nurse.  Lots of stress goes with being a nurse!

Not fully understanding what nursing entails can give some second thoughts to weather that is what they truly want to do with their life!

Many young adults and kids aspire to become pilots, doctors, lawyers, etc, without really knowing and understanding fully what it entails!  Sometimes we want to choose a certain career based on  what our parents want for us, the prestige that it brings, or for the lure of the financial rewards.

I think it is important to fully understand, and even spend time in your chosen career, then decide if that is what you really want to pursue, before going to college for several years and spending lots of money, just to find out in the end that it really isn't what you thought it was, or it is not what you desire to do for the next 40 years!

It's not what's happening to you now or what has happened in your past that determines who you become. Rather, it's your decisions about what to focus on, what things mean to you, and what you're going to do about them that will determine your ultimate destiny.

This, to me, sounds a lot like "cold feet". Like when you are getting married, you know you've always wanted to get married and then a few days before you get all anxious and start questioning whether or not you want to do it or not.

You might also feel "stuck" now that you've done all that schooling and decided it wasn't for you, my friend went through 2 years of cosmotology schooling and now she is working in a product store since she didn't realize that cutting hair full time would irritate her excema.

I would suggest finishing, just so that you can complete your education and have that on your resume even if you decide to do something else. Plus you most likely have to pay for it anyway so you should get all you can out of it. There are probably also many other things that you can do with your nursing degree rather than emergency situations.

About this weekend, you might find that it is much easier than you expect. Try it and if you have to leave, then leave but the only way to really find out is to actually do it.

Good luck!!

I've been through 3 weeks of clinicals. One in the ER, one in the CCU, and the other on a regular medical-surgical floor. I let my anxiety get to me every time and question, but then once I leave those clinicals its like i am SO mad about myself for questioning any of it. I absolutely know that is where I am suppose to be!!!!

Stick with it. It's a meal ticket for life. You won't regret it once you have the degree and license. There are plenty of positions that won't hit your anxiety button. Few degrees today offer as much opportunity, freedom, security and good pay, plus actually doing some good, making difference.
