had to call poison control. again
« on: May 14, 2011, 07:50:59 AM »
so, i'm thankful for poison control. but geez. the weirdest things happen to me.

so last night, after swim practice i told my 10 year old to get in the shower. of course he complained, wanted to skip the shower, blah blah. but i made him go take a shower. i was going to get some take out for dinner just up the street. my hubby was gone. but, instead, i thought i'd wait until he got out of the shower because i didn't want to leave while he was in the shower. so, he took a 10 min shower. when he got out he realized i was home and called me back there. he asked me "mom what was all the blue stuff in the bathtub?" i then realized that i had cleaned the bathtub today with comet and i left it in the tub while i cleaned the rest of the bathroom. then i forgot to ever rinse it out. so, he took a shower standing in comet!!  i asked him why he didn't call me and he said he thought i'd left. then i'm like, son, a little common sense! why did you get in there if it didn't look right. of course, he just thought it was soap. but geez...ok, i digress...

anyway, so because of my HA i had to call poison control.  they said it was fine just to be sure to get it off his feet. i read the comet can and it said to rinse with water for 15 mins if you get it on your skin. so, i washed his feet really good twice with soap and a washcloth, then i had him sit on the side of the tub and let water run for 15 mins over his feet.

anyway., poison control said nothing systemic would happen. so i made myself let it go.

then he was in bed reading and he told me that his chest hurt. right above his heart. i tried to think it was just muscle ache from swimming. a few minutes later he said, my arm hurts now(his left arm). so, i started to panic on the inside! i'm like oh no. the comet was absorbed into his little body and now he's gonna have a heart attack! it stopped hurting and i think it was just muscular.
my hubby was home now and he calmed me down, but, geez.
should i worry about his chest/arm pain?
i am sick of the panic with this HA.

just had to share.

reece.  honey....

you know we ALL get aches and pains.  I field several aches/pains complaints from my kids daily.  Our bodies sometimes hurt or have those little quirks.

so did you son's feel look a little "smurfy"  :winking0008: .

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.

I'm sorry, but this post made me laugh  :laugh3:  I would have been the same way.  I don't like my kids coming in contact with any cleaning products or chemicals of any sort.  Logically, I know they won't  be "poisoned" by such small amounts of exposure.  My ocd brain convinces me that they have been contaminated and will suffer the effects years from now.  I'm the same way.  After I clean I have to wash my hands like I'm about to perform surgery and/or take a shower.  I have 3 boys and all come to me every other day with some ache or pain.  The apple doesn't fall far from the tree!

Yes.. I have commented on this before but I have come to the acknowledgment that my hesitancy to touch certain chemicals is bordering on OCD.  Only I don't really care so much about most germs.... I just don't like the idea of "non-natural" chemicals.

But the truth is that PLENTY of people get exposed all the time to a bit of this and a bit of that which might not be the safest for us but most of us go on to have no long lasting negative effects of any seriousness.

I would say to Reece.... , have faith in your child's body!!!  It is an amazing body and it, believe it or not, will take care of itself for the most part, even when coming across "germs" and "foreign invaders" and "unnatural chemicals"... there are so many systems working in your child's body that want him to live and usually our bodies win!!  Survival is ingrained in us.  Begin to believe in the power of your sons's body!!  Our bodies are amazing and can handle quite a lot, considering.

I think you sort of do what I do (only about myself)... I lose faith in my body.. I mean, if I were betting on it in a gamble I would bet it would lose... Why should I be such a pessimist?  Is it not amazing?  Does it not fight off colds and get over soap splatters in my eye and so and and so forth?  Even considering the fact I've had some bouts with some health issues, I still need to have awe in the powers of my body and its ability to heal and ward off threats...

Think of your child's body as strong, fresh and warrior-like!!!   Don't think of it as a weakling set up for failure when its up to a task ;D

It's also possible your energy and worrying about the situation may have caused your child to worry that he was sick. If you freaked because he was standing in the comet and made him rinse his feet for 15 mins under the tap, I'm sure he became just as concerned something terrible could happen.

In reality, he will be fine! Once the shower was on the comet would have begun to dilute and wash away down the drain.

Just try to think about how your energy can be interpreted by others.

Absolutely. It's easy to instill the same anxieties we have into our children. Please be careful of your (over)reactions in front of your child!

And it rolls about like this: Unconscious ignorance, conscious ignorance, conscious competence, unconscious competence. Then it repeats. Nobody is ever truly a master at anything, there is always something to learn, either by mind or body.

I'm really bad with cleaners, soaps, shampoos, lotions etc....takes me a week or sometimes more just to get the courage to test it on my arm; then a week of testing before I will use it fully.

My husband does the strong cleaner usage in my house and once he did the same thing; cleaned the bathtub with comet. He did rinse it, just not good enough. I filled up the bath and got in and by the time I was all the way in I started to feel the gritty comet on my legs and bottom.

I immediately panicked and took a shower, but nothing happened to me; not even itchy skin or anything and I was almost fully immersed in the cleaner, not just the feet.

I think we are all guilty at one time or another for overreacting when it
comes to our children.
