son with ADHD
« on: April 29, 2007, 07:51:15 PM »
I have a 13 year old son with Autistic spectrum disorder and ADHD plus other behavioural and learning diffficulties.  He is particularly challenging at the moment and I think hormones and puberty may be playing a part.  I was just wondering if anyone else who uses this site has a friend or relative with any of these sort of problems and has any advice or tips they can share with me.  I have done a lot of research myself into the disorders myself so I am well clued up on that aspect, however, every child is an individual even in these cases and it would be of great support to hear success stories or good tips for managing extremely chalenging behaviour.

Thanks everyone

What kind of advice do you need? With school, everyday life, attitude?? I know quite a lot about this ADHD stuff! My nephew has it and I have talked to several people with teens diagnosed with adhd. Let me know if i can help!

I can't offer much advice for your specific situation but I can give you a success story.   I went to highschool with a young man who was autistic and, although not outright stated, I'm pretty sure he like many other autistic individuals had other disorders lingering.  He wasn't expected to be able to keep up in a "regular" school setting with the rest of the students.  They thought his behavior would be too disruptive and he would have too difficult a time keeping up academically.  He told us his story our senior year of highschool about three weeks before we graduated.  Up until that point most of us had no idea he was autistic.  He graduated in the top half of the class, had a girlfriend, and went off to college.  I'm not sure where he is now, but considering what was expected of him and what he actually accomplished, I think he was pretty successful.
Your son is lucky that you are involved and have educated yourself on the subject.  He's at a distinct advantage because of that fact.   The teenage years are challenging for most parents and teenagers and probably even more so in your situation but it sounds like you are doing a great job.  Just hang in there.

Thanks for that Kate,  Its nice to get positive words of support, he does attend a special school in which he is actually thriving.  So not all is negative, I guess sometimes, it difficult to accept having a child like that, and I will probably never lose the chink of hope that he may become 'normal' or 'grow out of it', one day.
